    The truck will not shift up by itself and will only downshift around 1200 to avoid stalling

    That is what I thought . @wiljayhi must be using the plain S mode . Maybe forgetting to press the ETC button to activate gearlock ?

    This has been my experience with 87/GL:

    The trans won’t upshift if you leave it gear 1 but if you select any gear above that it will auto upshift to that gear with shifting happening around 2200 (normal acceleration). Once it attains the gear you’ve selected it is locked there unless you up or downshift manually or come to a stop.

    If you don’t downshift manually to the proper gear, it will auto downshift from whatever gear it’s in to gear 1 when revs get below 1100 or so.

    Another nice feature is you can turn gear lock off at any time by cancelling ECT. Your S mode reverts to auto up/down.

    You may be right about the upshifting from any gear when hitting the red line. I would guess that’s it’s a result of WOT on takeoff but I’ve had no direct experience of redlining since I’ve had no need to go there. (Never tried it)

    I’ve been playing around with gearlock for two weeks now and keep discovering different ways to use it effectively. Early on I emailed Mat when I discovered unexpectedly that it would auto upshift through gears. Normal behaviour said he. Happy was I.

    I thought the same as @Anchovy before stumbling on the auto upshift one day when I forgot to downshift ftom 4th gear and came to a stop. Absent mindedly just stepped on the gas (normal acceleration) and it upshifted (2200 or so) through the gears back to 4th. I confirmed with Mat that this is normal operation. It suits me because I like not having to upshift it if I choose. Either auto or manual upshift is possible with the gear lock option.

    (I had ECT on, I didn’t forget, honest :))

    2017 double cab short bed trd off road 4wd w/ premium pkg.
    Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Tried p5 flash utility, got to screen with "interface" and "system Id" in the screen, but identify and all the rest of the buttons are grayed out.
    When I try pcm flash utility, says guardant dongle not found...
    I have both ovt plug and usb cable and tactrix plug and cable, can't get either to do anything

    The difference is that you can lock the trans in any gear you choose. If for example you are at speed in 4th gear (gear lock) and you press down on the gas the trans will not down shift. Your rpms may increase and you will speed up but you will remain in 4th gear.

    Under normal acceleration it should auto upshift if you have selected any gear above 1st. To verify this, from a stop, move the selector over from D to S, it will select 4th gear by default (don’t change it). Turn on ECT, Bob’s your uncle. Auto upshift, manual downshift.

    Yes, correct. Once it attains the chosen gear 3,4,5,6, it is locked in that gear unless you manually change it up or down or come to a stop (auto down from chosen gear to gear 1 without going through gears in between).

    I don’t want auto upshifts. When I shift to S I manually downshift to 2 or 1 and then turn on ECT. From there all upshifts and downshifts are manual unless on downshifts I let rpms fall too low. I’ve been to 65 in 2nd and there was no auto upshift. I drive in this mode a lot and have never had an auto upshift.However if you leave it in S4 I can see where it would upshift from 1 to 4,but I would rather shift myself to wind the gears out a little more.

    @OVTune , Would it be possible to customize the gearlock tune to activate gearlock by just simply shifting to S mode, without having to push the ECT button and leave ECT functional in D?

    I’m not advocating for auto upshifts with gear lock, it’s just what I prefer (manual downshifting is a given). Most folks likely want to do their own upshifting, only saying that auto upshifting is one possible outcome if your top gear selection is 2 to 6.
