From what I was reading it seems MPPT is a lot more adaptive based on the status of the battery. I read a long complicated article and can't convey it that well though. MPPT may be better but is more expensive

Other than @YamaDirtrider I don't know if anyone else is really versed in solar stuff here?

Hey so I guess I’m officially a Coloradan? Or is it “Coloradian”? Or maybe “Coloradonese”? Not sure. Lol

I started this trip in Indianapolis. Packed up truck bed to max and shoehorned a bunch of stuff (to include a 56” TV) in the bed and back seat full of stuff. Bought a Tyger trifold tonneau off of Amazon and it the reviews are very accurate! It’s held up great since purchasing it a month ago. Also some cheapo seat covers from Advanced Auto parts to stave off dog scratches.

    8B3C3E8B-D5B4-40EC-9553-06C8061347E0.jpg

Then hit the road bound for San Antonio with my trusty sidekicks Wego and Dax. Loved the drive despite the fact I had to go through Arkansas. Seriously. Worst roads and drivers in the Union.

Then in SA, I got me a Uhaul and went to load up my stuff from storage. Upon arrival, I find evidence of the worst shittiest Lyft driver. Lol

Then back on the road to CO via Lubbock and Amarillo. Funny thing about west Texas is that everyone seems to think their vehicles can do some serious off-roading as evidence by the steel grate faux-Prinsu rack (complete with area lights and front lightbar), Nitto Grappler tires, and one inch lift equipped RAV4.:der:

Decided to shack up in Amarillo and get some trailer backing experience in before somebody else wanted to “be like Mike”. Lol Also...side note: I'm not sure who the hell is designing hotels nowadays, but I don't think they thought the bathroom designs through entirely.o_O

When i researched it, the price difference/charging benefits for a small system meant pwm was the better cost/benefit. Mppt is "better" but you won't notice much difference when running one or two panels to justify the increased cost...imo

I'm far from an electrical or solar expert, but thats what i gathered with my system. My single 100w renogy panel and pwm controller allowed me to run my fridge 24/7 for over a year.

Everyone kept telling to get gas at every opportunity because there’s nothing between Amarillo and Raton. Fun fact: I topped off three times in between there and never got below 3/4 tank (with a double axle trailer). Maybe they all drove RVs with 10-gal tanks? Lol

Also, it’s the drive from IH-10 to Lubbock that really blows. Gotta stay on alert for the distant song of banjos.

Only time I’ve ever been pulled over out of state was on I-10 in west Texas, bought an Audi in San Antonio and drove it home, set the cruise at 82 (80mph zone) was pulled over within minutes for speeding

Welcome! You picked a great area too! I'd be surprised if the guys at RCI don't know you by first name soon.
Take it easy on the Rav4 though, there is one local that I've been on trails with and although he's got to be hard on his right pedal in some areas it was surprisingly capable. I mean he's not rock crawling but to each their own on the overlanding vehicles.

This is what I was thinking. If you've got an array of panels and you're really trying to properly control the charging it would make sense. I knew at most I'd have 2 panels (where i'd put them i have no idea, my single takes up half my prinsu now) so I opted for the basic PWM and it has worked great. Yea the draw from me running the shower, and fridge, and lights hardly even pulls what that panel puts back in. Never worried about running out.

No kidding. Almost every time I go race in texas I get pulled over. Never ticketed since it's always been less than five over, but it's ridiculous!

I'm going to be running 2 50W panels on top of a roof rack. No Aux battery, just going to primary to save money for now.

The other thing I am debating is where to mount the controller. I could do it inside one of the seat cabbies in the cab, or get a waterproof one and just mount it into the bed sides. Just don't know how much heat they put out

I have mine inside of a sealed box with everything else, i've never checked heat coming off but it has enough space around it. I don't think heat will be an issue.
Go through the cab vents? If you don't use the sharkfin I've seen people go in that way too. I guess it depends on how you would prefer to run the wires to the battery, through the firewall or under the cab?

Looks great, strong AF and much better departure angles. we have some recovery points in the works for back here as well.

My question to yall is, black it out or clear coat it for the mad max look?

Yeah I thought about going through the shark fin just because of the fact I'm OCD when it comes to wires/cable management.

I think I might just screw the controller into the bed side, then get some decently insulated wires and run everything along the frame to the engine bay.

Only thing is making the wires coming down from the panel's look nice. Might try some of these to make the cable look nice, stick them to the body of the truck on the way down to the controller. https://www.amazon.com/eBoot-Pieces-Adhesive-Management-Holder/dp/B01HR9VS4I
