The thing is he got his "dream" truck, no matter what it was. This will probably be his only new truck ever. In cases like this brands don't matter, its fulfilling a dream.

    Still stock completely capable!
That would be cool but I have heard rumours that a lot of car company are switching more to gas / petroleum and away from diesels since they keep getting nailed with emission problems. Would LOVE to see the Hilux diesel but I honestly think we will see a hybrid/ electric taco before diesel in NA.. BUT that said I pray your right and I’m wrong!

The roll out will be like the Model Y a big yawn-fest right about the time the economy is so slowing. Will see that the raging I need to return this to stock begins in the 3rd qtr when that RTT that was put on the Discover Card in December of 2018 starts eating into to the eating out budget. The Instaham likes won't be rolling in like they use to and the wife well she was never really that much into camping in the first place because why can't we go somewhere tropical? The husband needs to trade in his one year old Tacoma on a new one because 2020 vision means WooDoo Blue can even be had in an SR. Why the hoopla of 2020 well you see power seats and some different grill facia. Little does Chad know that power seat will be the death of him since his wife Ashely can now see over the hood scoop and well she's the bread winner and he's getting stuck with the Corolla with Starbucks cups and a radio that's stuck on Lada Gaga the Russian version of Lady Gaga this week. In despite all of this the 2020 will still have rear drums

I suspect you may be right.
The reasons are complex, and I won't venture a prediction.
    But consider these points:

    1) Mazda is coming out this year with their HCCI engine. (Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition).
Kinda like a diesel that burns gasoline. Though it has spark plugs for cold starts.
Compression ignition allows greater efficiency and far less carbon particulate emissions.
Its super lean burn mode supposedly raises engine efficiency 20-30%, allowing fuel efficiency on par with diesels.
If this delivers on the claims, expect the other car makers to go the same direction.

What I want to know, and the article linked below doesn't answer, is this:
Does this mean the HCCI engine will have comparable performance to diesels?
I mean towing capacity, MPG under heavy load, torque, etc. The reasons you'd want a diesel.

    https://www.extremetech.com/extreme...ency-breakthrough-diesel-engine-runs-gasoline

    2) Emissions standards in developed countries continue to tighten, along with fuel efficiency standards.
Both factors contributed to the "yellow vests" riots in France, by the way.
After decades of favoring diesels, EU countries have reversed course, imposing higher diesel taxes and stricter emissions standards.
If this continues, diesels will become less common in Europe, at least in personal vehicles as opposed to heavy transport.

What that means for the US is anyone's guess.
Will manufacturers see less incentive to offer diesels in future?
That is, smaller diesels for personal vehicles?
Consider this in combination with point #1 above.

    3) Diesel fuel Supply and Demand.
You'd think the above would mean lower diesel prices, right?
    Think again.
The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has imposed new fuel standards, to come into force in 2020.
The new standards allow a maximum of 0.5% of sulfur (by weight) as opposed to 3.5% currently in maritime fuel.
So big container ships have to do one of the following to comply:

    A) Retrofit highly expensive scrubbers.
    B) Switch to diesel. Easiest option, but maybe not the least expensive in the long run.
Depends on the trend in diesel fuel prices at a given time.
    C) Modify engines to use straight "light, sweet crude", i.e. low sulfur crude.
Such as fracked WTI (West Texas Intermediate) crude, "fracked" oil, of which there's abundant and growing supply.
WTI contains approx. 0.24% sulfur by weight.

I've followed these developments with great interest, as I own significant oil stocks.
I confess I don't know how this is gonna shake out.
But I doubt any one option will predominate. At least for a while.
Shippers are highly sensitive to fuel prices, since they use a lot of it.
Those prices fluctuate. The term for this is "volatility", which is very pronounced in the oil market.
It's unclear how engine maintenance costs factor for the various options.
No doubt some will take their best guess and go one way, while others will go with another option.

    4) Gasoline supply and demand.
Supply first: There will be abundant supply for the foreseeable future.

    Here's the thing:
There's not a helluva lot of flexibility as to what refineries can produce.
That's pretty much determined by the grade of the crude feedstock.
If memory serves, for a barrel of WTI, you're gonna get gasoline output of around 47%, plus or minus a few percent.
For middle distillates like diesel, it's in the range of 30-some percent.
The rest is lubricating oils, parrafin, tar, etc.
Plastics feedstocks are natural gas, along with feedstocks derived from natural gas processing and crude refining.
If demand is higher for, say, diesel than for gasoline, the refiners can only squeeze so much out of the feedstock.

Okay, Demand, and by implication, price:
There will be Demand for gasoline, because there will be abundant supply.
The supply will be there, because the crude will be pumped regardless, for all its other uses, and you're gonna get mostly gasoline.
No way around it. The gasoline will find a market.
    Price, I dunno.

BTW, to the extent that EVs gain market share, that can only exert downward pressure on gasoline prices.
The idea that EVs will replace all gasoline powered cars, or even most of them, is pure fantasy.
Seems to me their prime market is dense urban areas, that's it.
At least for the foreseeable future.

If anyone cares to correct my assessment or add anything, I'd be much obliged.

God no! Those fugly Hiluxes can stay in Australia where they belong. Ugliest truck ever designed by mankind. Boxed frame or not, it makes my eyes bleed.

But I confess I've never paid much attention to styling. [shrugs]

You’ll know all about styling when you crack those stupid canards off that sit below your fog lights and are all part of one giant $5000 assembly from Toyota. This hilux is really the ultimate mall crawler. No Offroad pedigree at all. Major fail.

And I'm praying they will fix the lower head room in Gen 3 as I touch the roof in non-sunroof and my forehead is clean inside the models with it. Has stopped me from buying a Gen 3. With 1/4 million on our truck now we would have liked to get the new TRD Pro.
