Japan does it every other service but I wouldn’t recommend that dirty filter equals dirty oil.

Look into getting an oil filter relocation kit or a 1GR Tacoma.

Over the years, I've taken several to over 200K using dino and changing oil w/filter every 3-3.5K. Never an oil related problem. On this recently purchased Taco ('08) I went with Mobil-1, I always use Napa Gold filters. Changing at 5K intervals. I know I'm leaving some on the table, but it's cheap insurance to me.
FWIW, changing your oil, & not the filter is like taking a shower and putting you dirty grundys back on....it just ain't right.

Is it that bad to change? I mean, it could be a 22RE.

Wow! You don’t have time for that..During this whole debate about doing it right or not I could have done fifteen or more oil changes on our trucks (The Right Way), maybe you should show up to a Tacomaworld bbq and see how easy it is to work on our trucks. There are many other oil changes much harder than ours, theres really no excuse if you have time to tend this thread, I don’t have time for DAT, lol. There’s no excuse for being lazy.o_O

I keep trying this. Have to switch them fast as the oil comes gushingly out the filter mount a nd is hot as hell. “A friend” suggested turning the engine off but I heard “in some thread” that us purists should change the filter with it running. Couple more years of this and I’ll look like I run the fryer at MacDs naked.

Uh. Thanks. Probably the nicest thing anyone has ever implied about a 3rd gen owner.

Call me crazy but I'd rather spend 5 more mins dropping the skid then having dirty filter. Want this thing to last me a bit...

. The same as a 5th gen 4Runner and been that way since late 2009 on them. The downside is going into a dealer and trying to buy a filter and they try to sell you one for a 3rd gen Tacoma and not the 4Runner. The filter elements are about 1” in difference (yes, the 4Runner’s is bigger).

    Pay once, cry once, right?

Never had an issue on my '86, besides having to drop the skid..

    Just kidding.

Can't you grab the filter out from the wheel well? It's right behind the rubber flap.

Doing it right is changing the filter at every oil change.

WOW, there must be some realllllllllllllllllly lazy people, that won't change the filter. Half my spine is screwed together, and I wouldn't think of doing an oil change without changing the filter. I just did my oil change last Tuesday, and yes, it can be pita, at times. I was sore as hell for 2 days afterwards. I would hate to be the poor sucker that purchased one of the used Taco's from some lazy Turd that never changed the filter. To find out after I purchased it, that the previous owner only changed the filter every now and then, or when they felt like it, would piss me off to the point of wanting to beat the shit out of someone. There really is no excuse for abusing a good vehicle, because I might scratch my arm, of chip a nail from reaching up to unscrew the filter. Do I wish it was straight up and down, so it wouldn't leak oil all down my arm when removing, yes, but it isn't so I deal with it. Sorry for the rant, but this is exactly the kinda shit that pissed me off. Lazy fnn people.

Hard to find someone that'll go the extra mile like that. Even if spendy, it's worth the peace of mind knowing it's done right.

Not lazy, just don’t look forward to taking a bath in warm oil and having clean up a huge mess when I get home after bustin 11 hour work days

Toyota is still laughing at my evertime I change oil filter, I’m sure of it.

Simply looking for a way to extended oil change intervals by Filter quality or whatever.
Has anyone actually opened up a filter at 3k, 5k, 10k to look at it????? I haven’t.

“Oh god that lazy piece of shit won’t even change his oil filter!!!”
    “They took our jobs!”
    “Dey tukr jerbssss!!”
