I personally like mine mbrp catback. It does sound loud when cold start but once warm up its a nice not overly noisy growl. If you go up the mountain it will be a bit loud but everyday driving I hardly notice the noise anymore.

It has less to do with having 6 cylinders has it is the 60° V that the GR engines use...1GR, 2GR, 3GR.

A 60° V has very even and closely spaced exhaust pulses. This is what gives the GRs their droney sound at nearly any RPM with AM exhaust systems.

90° Vs have uneven exhaust pulses. That's what gives them a deeper burble...be it 6 or 8 cylinders. Most V8s are 90° because it's inherently better balanced than other configurations. Many V6s (especially older designs) were simply 90° V8s with 2 cylinders left off....think GM's famous 4.3 and Dodge's 3.9 V6s...based on 350 and 318 V8s respectively....just to name a couple.

Problem with 90° V6s is, unlike 90° V8s, they are inherently unbalanced making them feel unrefined with lots of NHV issues.

However, a 60° V6 is inherently much better balanced. Plus the 30° less in the V makes for a more narrow package. So Toyota chose refinement and packing for the GR. In fact, Toyota has never produced a 90° V6. They were producing V6s long before V8s. So there was no backwards engineering as seen in the early days of the Big 3 V6 development.

Bottom line? Sure, you can make the GR sound louder and maybe even a bit deeper at certain RPMs. But you'll never achieve that truly burbably guttural sound. It just not the nature of the design.

Nope, unless you install incorrectly and somehow that adversely affects other systems on the truck. I think that is very unlikely though.
The CAI is easy to install. Just follow the instructions and take your time. The install on the cat-back is not difficult per se except it involves getting under the truck, usually positioned on a ramp of some sort unless you've got an aggressive lift. It's doable by yourself but a helper makes it easier. I had the dealer do my exhaust and as I recall they charged around $50 which was worth it to me not to have to crawl around under the truck. I did the CAI myself in about and hour.

I think they were worthwhile upgrades if you can afford them. I wouldn't max out a credit card to have either.

I have the MBRP black catback exhaust on mine. I like it definitely loud. Definitely has drone. On highways its not too bad. Im happy with mine overall. I wanted a tougher and sporty sounding truck and now that's what I have.

I have a Borla and like it a lot. I have heard the TRD exhaust when I test drove the TRD Pro this past summer. The TRD exhaust is quite mellow in sound. The Borla is a slight uptick but not annoying, at least IMHO. And I went with the Borla due to the price compared to the TRD exhaust. From the sound clips of the MBRP I've heard I wasn't sure if I'd like it (too loud?).

I painted my Borla tip black.

Wow, that has be to new choice over the past month or two. Thanks for posting.

I was able to pick up my Borla for $500 shipped. $6 for high temp paint. Seeing the Borla 140680BC for north of $600. I'll pocket the $100+ and use the rattle can.
