Hey i replaced my cv shaft and realized it is not sitting flush. It has about a half inch of play. I believe its just the housing and not the shaft.
I hammered it on the lip pretty dam hard many times and it isn't going in any farther.
Any ideas of what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated.
The 1st pictured is of it pulled out the next is of it pushed in.

It seems like its in there l, i live on a dirt road though. So i worry it will fill with dirt. I also worry the differential fluid will leak out. If not sealed. Also it was shaking like crazy on the highway going over 60mph.

Mine looks the same and I have changed a lot of cv axles. If you put it in 4wd does the vibrations stop? If it’s not leaking now then it is fine. My truck sees a lot of dirt.

Ill try to put in 4wd and see next time i can get above 60mph. I just redid the front end and had an alignment done. Thought I'd be good to go.

I searched around but couldn't find one that matched. Except people saying the length is wrong but it matches the old, so i don't think that's it. I am almost positive the old dust shield came out.

Mine also looks like this on a 3rd gen. Are the pictures you posted on the drivers side? My passenger side sits just inside of flush, while the drivers side dust shield sits probably 1/4 - 1/2 inch outside the diff housing. If anyone has figured anything out on this I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

OP last posted in Nov 2020 so doubt you'll see a reply. :(

Maybe post away in the 3rd gen section of the forum. Might have better luck in an immediate answer. Also, try these threads.

All terrains, ain’t need no mods to hit the trails
Dealing with the same thing on my driver side GX 470 haven’t had any leaks, but the passenger side leaked after installing. I guess I push the ceiling too far or damaged it and purchase another and try again wohoo. But no vibrations and the roaring I heard going 50+ is gone after the repair at least so just gotta get the diff sealed so I can take on long drives and get back to the trails she’s been waiting

I guess mine was just residual diff fluid after I changed my needle bearing. Had what seemed to be leaking after the install but, after about 4 weeks of driving it stopped and no signs of leaking since. I did keep an eye on my fluid level through out the “leaking” period and it was never low.
