I try to find rocks this time of year. Theres usually a few hanging around. I suck at fishing deep water.
    Shallow too for that matter.

Stupid busy. I wish people would quit eating ice cream so I would be forced into an early, poverty stricken retirement.

    Typically trout.
Edit... most lakes here, bass are catch and release only. They plant trout in the winter and catfish in the spring.

Dixon lake has some of the biggest bass I have ever seen.
I have fished castaic the lower lagoon, never the upper lake. You need a boat or float tube / kayak to get to the bigger bass. I fish from shore, just got a float tube and all that. Took it out a couple of times and it's kinda not my thing. I keep it just incase I find a urge to try it again.
Typical bass here is between 2 to 5 lbs

So, did I ever get drunk and tell y'all about the time I took Grandma shark fishing?

Well, I was living in Corpus Christi, Texas at the time, driving a propane truck, and had always wanted to go deep sea fishing. I had some vacation time coming so I called up Mama in New Mexico and told her to load up Daddy and come visit us. I'd get the little woman to cook us up a big pot of Cajun shrimp boil and we'd all go fishing in the gulf. She said she couldn't leave Grandma alone so I told her "Hell, bring her too. She likes to fish".

    So that's what we did.

Now, this wasn't a private charter, professional sharker like Quint in "Jaws". We didn't have that kind of money. This was a day trip outfit on the pier, with a big boat catering to tourists that wanted to say they'd been shark fishing. There was probably thirty of us on the trip, plus the captain and crew. My wife and two girls decided they'd rather get their fish from Long John Silver's and bowed out. So it was me, my 12 year old son, Mom, Dad and Grandma making the voyage. Now the rule was, When someone got a fish on, they'd announce it on the PA and everyone else had to quickly reel in their lines and put their poles straight in the air until it was landed or broke free. It didn't make sense to me at first, because I'd only ever caught catfish, perch, trout and such out of the rivers and lakes in the southwest. I soon learned they had real fish in the gulf that would try their best to drag you off the boat and eat you first.

The crew turned out to be very good at their job. They would do everything they could to help while letting the clients actually bring in the catch. They would grab the arm holes of your life jacket and hold you from being dragged overboard, like a makeshift fighting chair. Well, my son was the first of the family to hook something. It wasn't a shark but whatever the hell it was dragged him from one end of the boat to the other. Back and forth several times. The crewmen hanging on to him, giving him instructions and encouragement the whole time. All I could do was watch helplessly and wonder how to tell his mom that he'd been eaten by Moby Dick. Poor kid was exhausted by the time he finally brought it close enough to hook with a gaff. But the smile on his face was a mile wide and he couldn't wait to re-bait and go get another one.

Anyway, I was gonna tell you about Grandma. She was 72 years old at the time, maybe weighed 100 pounds and was a feisty, Bible thumping, snuff dipping spitfire. And about half crazy. She and Grandpa, in their younger days, had actually lived in a cave and herded goats for a living until my mom was born and they moved to town.

I visited and explored the cave many times until the Forest Service barred it up and required a permit. It had a nice freshwater spring and was pretty cool to think of them living the primitive life. The smell of several years of goat poop was still strong.

Anyway, her idea of fishing was sitting in a lawn chair under a shady Cottonwood tree beside the Pecos River with a glass of iced tea and a spit cup. Reading her Bible and occasionally hooking a perch or two. As fate would have it, she hooked a three foot Tiger Shark that you would of thought needed a scuba tank and a rifle to bring down. It probably took over a half hour, with the crew doing most of the work, to bring that bugger on the boat. Once on deck it was thrashing around trying to bite everything in sight. One of the crew grabbed a baseball bat and beat it to death before it could really do some damage. Grandma just stood there in terror, then threw her rod down, went and sat under the awning, took a dip of snuff and never fished another day in her life.

All in all, we had a great time and everyone got their fill of catching little sharks and various saltwater fish. We cooked and ate our catch that night and shark tastes like crap when you don't know how to cook it. but it was quite an adventure and a lot of fun for such a low budget outing.
