Playing with some thinner stuff (16g) and .025 wire with gas.

Is this discoloration on the backside indicative of good penetration? Or not necessarily?

Please show some pics. I don't do enough thin metal work to offer anything.

That's how I judge penetration. Just means the metal got nice and warm.

Well the exact same settings, but just a practice bead on a single piece of metal ends up looking like a weld on both sides so I would guess it's plenty hot

    Maybe too hot?
Interesting anyway the difference between a lap joint and a practice bead.

Instead of running beads on a single piece of metal practice actual joints, it’s much easier to judge a weld when you’re welding an actual joint instead of bead after bead on a sheet of metal.

Agreed. I think the practice beads had their place to get the feel of things (especially stick) but it's definitely easier to evaluate a joint.
Also, this thinner stuff is giving me an appreciation for tacking both ends and/or stitching to avoid distortion from the heat.

Lol ran some practice beads today. First got the hang of starting and stopping the 6011 which I struggled with.

    A0674661-135B-44B9-B628-38DE1A8A3362.jpg

Then ran practice beads of 6011 through/around them:

    Second round of 6011:

    And finished with 6013:

When I was playing with the 6011 I was experimenting with u’s and just a drag back and forth in a straight line. Ultimately I still feel more comfortable with tiny circles, I can see and manipulate the pool better IMO.

    Next up, joint practice.

I have yet to mess with the 60s....
I remember one of them was supposed to be much tougher than the other. Guessing by your pictures, the 6011 is harder?

Yeah it’s weird, barely any slag, it’s like a fine powder over everything instead of a thicker slag. 6011 is supposed to weld through nasty shit after you get it going, and supposed to penetrate better too. Definitely need more 6011 practice but I’ll probably build with the 6013 since the welds are prettier and it’s thin stuff.

Your 6010 and 6011 electrodes need to have a motion somewhat like a whip so very easy to do hard to describe .

For practice back in the day put a dot on a piece of paper use a pen lift off the paper move in a circular motion returning back to the dot

When welding your dragging the puddle from left to right the same basic whip is used in all position

Figured I'd post this here as well. I built my first bed rack last night. Still need to finish weld it. Its 3 inches over cab height in order to accommodate a hardshell RTT that hangs over the cab. I think its turned out half way decent for my first one.

60 amps. 1/2 rod at a time. No weaving.

That’s my game plan so far. I’m somewhat familiar with SS stick. Never tested for it but used it a bunch on conveyor systems.
