In the process of filling my rear diff from the drain plug. Does anyone know exactly how much oil the rear diff takes? It’s a 2004 2.7l 4x4

Probably should consider getting the old fill plug out and buying a replacement. Then you know its filled to the right level, and you dont have to worry about it in the future

Think I should fill like 3.3? Assuming some is going to spill out when putting the drain plug back in

How are you going to fill it through the drain plug without the oil leaking out?

Just like a boat motors lower unit, backwards fill it and the "vacuum" holds the fluid in while you put the plug in. You do lose some fluid but not as much as youd think.

True. I do not know much of working on boat motors. Good luck with the rear end. Gravity is a B.

Its actually super easy and takes hardly any time. They make adapter plugs and you pump it in the lower plug then once it starts coming out of the top plug, screw it in and give it one more pump and put the bottom plug back in. Easy peezy.

Now if it will work well with a rear dif, that i don't know. A lot more area to form that vacuum. Be interesting to see though.

This is my point gentlemen. A boat motor is designed to be serviced this way. Your rear diff has a fill plug because it is not. Best of luck, I hope it works well. Glad I am not dealing with it. I do not come here to discuss boat motors.

I gave the boat motor theory to try to help you understand the OPs thought process. We aren't hear to judge. Dudes in a pickle and if he wants to do some jimmy riggin then more power to him ! :boink:

Why not fix the fill plug?

I said good luck! Sorry I am not jumping on the "oh it will be easy" boat. I am sure it can be done but I would be welding something on the plug and fixing it. That is why you always remove the fill plug before pulling the drain plug. I hope it works for the OP's sake. Just glad I am not dealing with it. I am sorry we have a difference of opinion. It happens.
