93 gas is $1.85/L where you live? Good lord. It's $1.20-$1.40 in Calgary today.

Can you guys confirm about the pinging?

My truck LOVES to ping when driving around town with the AC on. Is the pinging eliminated? is performance improved even with the AC on.

Super interested. I just filled up so its gonna take a month to get to empty. 2 miles to work. otherwise i would fillerup with premium pronto.

It's like this. You can roll around with an ugly chick in the sack and with the light off it's all good. Or you can roll around with a hottie with the lights on and never get enough. They both work but which one you going to keep rolling with?

Around here 87 octane gas is 10% ethanol, 89 octane is 5% ethanol and 91 and up are 0% .... The government mandates that gasoline have an average of 5% ethanol for 'environmental' reasons. (God damn hippies) And this scheme means the gas stations hit that average 5% mark.

That accounts for a good amount of performance improvement. It's not the octane rating that makes it run better and have more power, it's the fact that the more expensive gas doesn't have ethanol. So in our case 91 gas DOES have more energy per gallon.

There is NO mid-grade in reality. In the ground are ONLY 2 tanks: 87 and 91. The pump is mixing the gas from the 2 tanks to "produce" 89 mid-grade.
Are you sure you pay for 89 and get 89? Most gas stations are own by people I wouldn't trust with a cup of water in Sahara.
So, since I don't want 87 and not sure about 89, I will get 91. Hopefully...

ASE master tech for over 30 years, Toyota Master Tech, Bought a 2019 Tacoma OR , #6 at least, not happy with the stumble at low rpm so I switched to 93 and felt a difference right away, not perfect but much better. Probably will go with the OV tune but am waiting to talk to those guys first. I'm thinking its the 11.8 compression causing detonation and the computer killing the timing but it feels like a miss for sure. Octane may not produce more power but timing does for sure and octane causes the computer to change timing. Love the thread, I'm way too cheep to buy 93 octane for no reason but you can believe what you want.
As a side note I had a vibration at 30 MPH slowing on the highway, cut the rear drums and its pretty much gone, Thanks guys at TW ;)

I thought I was being a douche but damn it always seem like a slight stumble when i am basically at a coasting throttle. Hanging around 40 to 45mph seems to surge and stumble a bit. Almost 25k on the truck.

Light throttle at low rpm will cause my truck to feel like a tire is out of balance on regular. With 93, I can drive the same stretch of road within 50 miles in the same situation, light throttle, low rpm, is completely smooth. 45 mph is a typical speed it is noticable for me, but it's not speed dependent.

I have about 37k miles. It's been tested extensively. For $5 you can test it yourself by pumping some premium.

You don't have to wait until your empty to try it. Adding a reasonable amount of premium to regular should be enough to test. Even if you added only a quarter tank, that's probably enough. Obviously the more premium you add, the better the test would be. My truck runs normal on 89, unfortunately Costco only has 87 and 93 though. Higher octane fuel should help with pinging.

I started will a full tank of 93, filled up at half a tank with 87, then 93, etc. probably more trouble than it’s worth, but Costco is right by my house and I like cheap gas.

Since my truck is not my daily driver, it sits M-Thursday most weeks sometimes longer unless its called upon. Last 3 full tanks has been NON Ethanol. Runs great and no stumbling down low in the rev range or under a load. My daily also runs on NON E.

I tried a full tank of 93 octane. No change, engine still stutters in the same places it always did (low RPM high gear). 2019 V6 OR.

After 20,000 miles of only using 87, I filled up with 93 this week. Immediate difference. Not power wise but pinging wise. Mine always spark knocked on downshifts from day one, even with just light throttle, no matter the gear. And I regularly avg 25mpg on a tank, so I'm not hard on it. Immediately after 93, no more half second of pings on downshifts. Might feel little more responsive since its not having to retard the timing. They can only "recommend" 87 becasue the cpu detects and compensates for it so you only vaporize a few bits of piston per downshift. I'm at 800 ft above sea level.

It’s the quality of the gas that makes a difference . I have ran 87 with shell and runs great but I run chevron . truck runs great and get pretty decent gas mileage out of a tank .

I wouldn't trust an mpg test like that with less than 3 fill ups per octane. So many variables he didn't account for. He did note the performance difference between the octane.

With regards to higher octane making the 3.5L run smoother that is 100% true. Many threads on here of people getting rid of their light throttle stumble (frequently in the 40-50moh range in 5th/6th gear) by switching to a high octane gas. Myself included, though I mostly still use 87 octane because I am cheap. I keep close track of my mpg but have never done a comparison of mpg between octane.
