Tried mine on for size. Still haven’t gotten to actually use it in the rain yet :notsure:

The SLO rainfly works OK. It is made of nylon (like a duffel bag) and not waterproof at all. I seam sealed mine and treated it twice a year. It leaked on the first outing when it wasn’t treated.

The vent battens have to be installed in the open position, which will be hard to reach for some folks. They slide in at the top of the vents.

If you pack it away in the rain, inside and outside of the fly get wet when you shove it into the duffel. Makes it fairly useless when you get to the next spot, especially if it’s still raining. And packing the gigantic fly away nicely, while it’s raining, is not easy at a muddy campground. If it only rains overnight, it dries pretty quickly in the morning.

It is very well made, but a ripstop waterproof material would have been better.

Obviously a waterproof replacement tent is the holy grail for Flippacs.

What did you use to waterproof and seal the seams?

    Used this a few times:

    ATSKO SILICONE WATER-GUARD https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQGUJM9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_n1ItCb4BFX4W4

    And this:

    Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof (Spray-On) 500ml https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002XZTNFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_L2ItCbESXFM2M

    Seam sealed with this (IIRC):

Gear Aid Seam Grip SIL Silicone Sealant for Silnylon Tents and Tarps, Clear, 1.5 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009RP8HO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_c4ItCbB6P3S1T

Seam sealer did fine. Applied it inside and out.

The spray did ok, but neither lasted very long. I didn’t have success with either in the snow. Water would bead and run off, but snow would eventually start melting and seeping in. Woke up every few hours in a storm to knock off the fresh snow, but it wasn’t enough.

There may be better products for this application.

We use 18 oz vinyl coated polyester for our popup campers. No fabric treatment needed... ever. It would be way too heavy for a flippac tent though.

One thing I can say is don't try to be a clever bastard like me when seam sealing. The tube at the bottom that holds the elastic cord on the SLO fly - no reason to seal that as it is below the tent. Indeed - assuming you don't mind that entire tube around the entire perimeter of the Flip Pac to completely fill up with water when it rains. Loads of fun to drain out in the morning...

    100% natural! ;)

Probably a lot stronger than the plastic as well.

Hey - now that you are experienced, you can make one in the field if it ever becomes necessary. Something to do while sitting around the campfire!

@Jim Bob Do you have a link for bimini quick disconnects? Know where I can buy support rods/bimini that will work with these quick disconnects?

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone here have any experience or seen a 6ft Flippac on a 5ft Tacoma bed?

I know it sounds like more trouble than it is worth, but I've seen some very good condition 6ft flippacs and the shorter model has been harder to find for me.

This guy on expeditionportal.com did it, but he doesn't really show pics of how he did it: https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/flippac-for-sale-6-ft-or-5-ft-short-bed-flippac.195580/

Seems like he keeps the tailgate down and built some kind of box/structure that is supporting the back side of the flippac on the tailgate?

Curious to hear opinions on how it could be done...

Used 2 kayak straps to secure the foam pad to the velcro'd standard mattress. No slipping on closure now.

That'd be too sweaty down south here, need something that breathes. Straps were an easy fix I already had on the truck.

And you can wrap it around the rear window handle, attach a carabiner and you got bed security or a decent alarm if someone tries to get in...

Hey guys! Quick question. Do you think 5k for this flippac is a decent deal? Comes with SLO rain fly and a sway away torsion bar. He Says no tears, stains, rips. Says all zippers are in good shape and mattress is good with no stains. I’ll be driving up to check it out. But I wanted to see what you guys think this is worth. Thanks.
