You have to wire in an RCA cable from the little white plug on the fuse panel. It will stay on your mirror if you leave it alone

You can choose to wire it to the display on the new stereo, or leave it in the rear view mirror. I left it in the mirror in my truck and no ra-grets. Some guys have probably rigged it to work with both but it's been a while since I've seen that thread. I don't see the point in that, the mirror works fine and it keeps your eyes up where they should be. Sometimes people are unhappy with the resolution that ends up on display on a HU. That kicks off a whole "looking for a better camera" snowball, or "I want rear view on demand, not just in reverse" and all kinds of complicated unnecessary stuff.

My advice is to leave it in the mirror. The big reason these stereos have this functionality is that most cars have rear view on the OE display and an aftermarket HU needs to do the same thing. That's not the case in Tacomas with the screen in the mirror.

Replacing the factory HU won’t affect the rear view in the mirror.

Just to confirm...yes the camera will still function in the mirror with an aftermarket HU if you leave all the camera wiring alone....
