What Winch Did You have Hidden?

I just ordered a CBI hidden winch mount for the Taco. I called CBI and asked about winch capacity and fitment. I was told the mount could handle “most any good sized winch” so I assume 12,000lbs is fine. But he did say I may need to relocate the control box.

What winch did y’all install and did you have to move/change/reposition some parts?

You don't need 12K on a Tacoma. 8-9K is plenty and be a lot lighter hanging on the front end. Less expensive too.

Smittybilt x2o 10k with synthetic rope... Ran these on all my jeeps!

 

Warn M-8000 here which I had on the Gen1 for 15 years. Pulled it, rebuilt it, spooled up some new synthetic, and put it on the Gen3. It never failed me when I needed it. Then again I wasn't winching myself up waterfalls or crazy obstacles. Have a snatch block if the M-8000 ever bogs down. And 250' of line now. If all that doesn't get me out of what I'm into, I've really got myself in a pickle.

 

I can’t speak to what winches work with the hidden mounts. But I’ll second the comments about winch capacity - 8k will do...10k is more than enough for the Tacoma. Drop a few extra dollars and get synthetic rope to save on weight.

 

I was looking at Warn’s VR12 over the VR10 only due to it’s lower amp draw.

Finished the SDHQ Hidden winch mount install with a Warn M8000-s. I didn't do a full write up but here are some pic's from the install. SDHQ instructions are quite easy to follow and their online video is even better but both only cover Warn Zeon Winches and I went with an M8000-s instead. As a result I focused on the control pack mounting images since I had to make that up as I went. The M8000 doesn't require the cutting of the center support like SDHQ calls for (Zeon winches are taller and hit the brace).

Jlusmc, I see why CBI stated I may need to relocate the control box. I bet that support is in the way for several winches.

about 3 hours give or take. was the first time I'd had the bumper off so there was a bit of time figuring it out.

 

No. This black plate typically mounts on the winch from the manufacture. I just unbolted it, turned it 90 deg and drilled two holes in my lower core support.

 

Yes, the support circled in blue is why they require winches with a removable control pack.

 

I put a Warn M8000s on my lo-pro bumper. Built a bracket and moved the control box behind the grill

Ha ha I’d feel pretty weird with a Marine Corps grille... But if they can make a Patrica one that would be sweet.
