So last night while driving home I realized my regular headlights were out. Hi beams work fine, fuses are fine...I'm sure the obvious answer is that the bulbs need replaced but I find it strange that they would both go out at the same time?

I find it even more strange since its the same bulb.

    Dual filament :frusty:

OP, remove the bulb and look and see if the filament is broken inside the bulb. I believe its the shorter of the two tier'd filaments. If that is not busted, get out a DMM and check for current at the plugs

Ironically, its actually not that uncommon for bulbs to die at the same time. Their design lives are the same, and operating conditions the same, so it happens quite often. Just happened about a month ago on my GF's mercedes. Driving along and BAM, dark, LOL

Same thing happened to me twice! The first time I thought it was something serious cuz it happened right after I installed my new head unit but as it turned out it was just the bulb.;)

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
It is possible to not notice the passenger side is out until after the driver's side goes out.
