So a good friend of mine is in search of a new Tacoma but he’s very specific in what he wants.

He’s searching for a Cement or Calvary- 4wd off-road long bed with all of the “premium” package benefits but NO sunroof.

I’ve been to 5 dealerships with him looking for this, 2 told us they can “order” it with a 12 week wait period. 3 of them told us that it’s not possible.

    Thoughts?

It’s really not. Toyota “allocates” to each dealer. Best thing to do is be patient.

I had to wait 6mo and bought mine in Houston haha

Good luck, it’s well worth it

Have you tried building it on Toyota’s web site?

Exactly, they don’t actually build it based on your request. Your desired configuration gets placed in the system and when a truck matching that config. rolls off the line if your lucky it becomes assigned to you. This is my understanding of how the process works.

They're correct, but there's a way around it. If you're super patient and the dealership is super cool, their inventory manager can go into the Toyota manufacturing system and request a specific build for a particular allocation vehicle. Toyota only builds certain configurations on particular days, so some vehicles may be a longer wait than others.

Some other items are bundled, and cannot be modified. If a particular configuration comes with a sunroof, you're getting the sunroof whether you want it or not. Toyota doesn't do half-builds of full customization. You either get everything they put in a particular package, or none of it.

When I ordered mine, the dealer went onto the computer, pulled up a list of Tacos that were scheduled to eventually be built, and found what I wanted. Mine was originally slated to go to the mid-west once it was built, but they had it reallocated to here.

Hopefully my truck thanks me for saving it by giving me many years of trouble free driving.

What CaptAmerica said is exactly right. Dealer can search for and request a particular config. -that is- if it fits within Toyota's designated package combos. Like the CAPT said, I think the Sunroof can only be had within certain packages. For example I could NOT have had a sunroof on my SR5 -had I wanted one.
MY Blue (BBP) SR5 4WD AC AT V6 -with the ONLY option being Tow pkg.(no mud guards,no mats -no nothing) -was nowhere to be found in our region and I waited 7-8 weeks for it. This was fine, as I got it EXACTLY as I wanted it and therefore I could put my own add-ons to it. Also I got it for a outstanding price after emailing and going to several dealers in Missouri, telling each , EXACTLY what I wanted with no substitutions.
Some regions may be harder to deal with than others, but my guess is that if you walk out of the dealers door --they may chase you down not to lose a sale.
Also most dealers will do anything to get you into something they have on hand -or can get in a few days. That is the way they want to take your money nowadays -they automatically assume that nobody has any patience to WAIT for exactly what they want. Therefore you as a customer wind up with options that you had previously decided you did not want/need.
If you walk into the dealer without doing any "homework" on options, costs ,colors, how you will pay, and other stuff -you are their perfect "sucker"!

The Sunroof is part of that package, it is impossible to get it without.

The "build option" on Toyota's website will work "restrictively" using the area you put in the zip code. In other words the build will vary depending on where you are in the country.
This is the piece where the "area distributers" get things "their way" Don't believe me? -- change the zip code (to a total different part of the nation) you insert and see what happens!

    Yep.

Your buddy's best bet is to work with a large dealership that does an insane amount of volume and chat up the Internet Sales Manager and the Inventory Manager. These are the two I worked with to get my exact build (which is a freaking unicorn). My dealership didn't even make me put any money down, because they knew that even if I backed out they'd sell the truck in a day. What actually happened was the truck showed up on the lot at 3PM, and by the time I showed up at 6:30 to close on it the dealership received 3 offers for it.

    MINE!!!

I’m guessing the upcoming TRD Pro with that lovely looking snorkel is destined for those areas with more sand/dust

Actually had someone ask me about it after I got the keys. Aimed them toward my salesman.

I've made $700 so far in referrals. Call AutoNation Toyota in Austin, ask for Nassir. He'll put you in whatever you want...if you're willing to wait for Toyota to make it.

If they can wait, it’s well worth it. I waited about 4 months for mine.

And call it what you want, but the dealership places the request, then when one is built the factory sends the allocation to the dealership.

Can't get the premium package without the sunroof. Toyota doesn't build them that way.

You CANNOT get the premium package with no moonroof 2016-2019, could change in 2020 but doubt it. He’d have to add the leather aftermarket
