If you are (un)fortunate enough to live in the rust belt, I highly recommend that you check your brake caliper pins on a regular basis. If you wait until it is time to change your pads, you'll probably find them solidly rusted in place turning a simple pad change into a major project.

I pull them out at every oil change (or tire rotation) and clean them up with a wire wheel on a bench grinder. I also got a set of wire bottle brushes at Harbor Freight to clean out the holes. I smear a little brake grease on them before reinstalling but nothing seems to stop the rust.

I learned my lesson the hard way on my 1st gen. Tacoma and hope I can spare someone else a lot of aggravation. Pictures are after one winter - I had pulled/cleaned/lubed them in the fall.

I just put new pads and flushed the brake fluid a couple weeks back.....

This was the left and right side....Mine were actually in good shape I did put a little grease in the holes.

Thats a great idea! Is there a company that makes the caliper pins in stainless?

I don't think there is really any stress on those pins. They just hold the anti rattle spring and keep the pads from falling out.

Couldn’t you just squirt a little WD or equivalent on it and call it good?

I’ll only buy the cobalt version if it has a TRD logo on it

Good info and advice. Anytime I take off a bolt I put anti seize on it before reinstalling.

In the marine industry, used to use a synthetic grease that was HT rated... stuck to everything and was extremely water/salts resistant. I can't recall the brand, but the color was a pretty blue hue. I have a tube around somewhere...

I've tried grease and I've tried anti-seize. Nothing seems to last. Maybe it's the heat. The pin in the picture was cleaned and lubed 5 months ago and there was no trace of anything when I pulled it.

This time I used some of this stuff:

    https://www.amazon.com/Versachem-26080-Synthetic-Caliper-Grease/dp/B004IUIJCE

It's synthetic, it's blue and it has a high temp. rating so maybe it will hold up better.

I've had these machined from stainless in the past, they don't cost much... I can get a quote if there's interest?

The pins should be the same as a 2006-2007 Subaru WRX. I don't think I've ever seen those rust.
