Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

Looks great! Mine comes in tomorrow. Is your suspension stock? Any rubbing? Loss of power? Do you also have a 33” spare?

 

Yeah, I bought 5 and another alloy wheel. No rubbing but they haven't seen the trail yet. Loss of power isn't that noticeable. I can tell the difference braking though. But only for the first few miles and then my brain just recalibrated and it now feels normal.

 

So the spare fit in the stock location with no mods as well? Is the stock spare a different offset the alloys? Oh man I hope mine gets delivered in the morning so I can get them installed in the afternoon

I haven't tried. I really don't like my spare down there as I do see trail time and sometimes its thousands of miles from home. Instead of a swing out tire carrier this time I am going to make a simple mount on the forward bulkhead of the bed to mount the tire(similar to what you see on an fj45/70 series).

 

My spare fit under the rear on a standard alloy with my CXT's, and IIRC the stock spare has similar offsets/specs

 

Did you have to cut or bend anything? Add a heat shield the exhaust pipe?

 

I've not touched anything, other than chopping the tip off just after the axle to keep it from banging the bed side on trails.

 

Stock tires with the KM3s tied down in the rear. I have a DiamondBack and didn’t feel like taking it off. Before you keyboard warriors get triggered, I used 4 ratcheting straps, 4 different tie down points per side.

I took the mudflaps off as I didn’t want to risk any fit or rubbing issues.


I took the tires to DiscountTire. $19 per tire (x5 tires) with the lifetime balancing and rotation I thought was really worth it. After the truck was on the lift, it took 1.5 hours to install and balance all 5. That’s with 3 people who took off and installed the tires. What took long was balancing the KM3s. The tech was adding weights, taking off weighs, adding them again. At one point I thought the tires were bad but they got ‘em dialed in eventually.

The spare didn’t fit well so I had them place it on the bed. That’s where I’ll keep it for now.


I was getting 13MPG via computer (uncorrected with the bigger tires) using side streets. I got 18 using the exact same route going to the shop but there might be more going up hills the way back. I have a Sprint Booster on “Sport-5” mode and I didn’t notice any big loss of power compared to stock. What is noticable, however, is the hum of the tires. They’re not loud but I can definitely tell the difference. That being said, if the KO2s were available in the same size I’d probably get the KO2s instead just because they’re more quiet on road. This is my first MT tire on any vehicle but I think after a week of driving I’ll get used to the hum. With moderate volume of the radio, the hum is barely distinguishable. So far no freeways though. Hopefully they're not going to much louder.

I think removing the mudflaps are unnecessary for the fit. I may put them back - still undecided on that.

Bottomline - I love the KM3s and no regrets even with the small quirk with the hum.

Not yet, bought them from a big department-style store and they didn't ship to the right part of the store. They did the general warehouse as opposed to the shop so they were MIA for a bit. Can't complain though, they ended up being $30 less a tire lol. I'm having the place install them tomorrow. Not terribly keen on it but that's the only way I'll maintain repair and replacement warranty on any road hazards/damage (including potholes) and free installation for the life of the tire up to 5 years. I'm just hoping it's a seamless fit because I don't really want a run of the mill shop cutting any plastic and they probably don't know Toyotas like the backs of their hands as opposed to a specialty shop if I were to get an alignment to avoid any suspension components rubbing. I'm a little worried about them hitting the UCAs because my stock sized winter tires are pretty friggin' close as is.

 

Got the tires on the truck and I just gotta say it. It’s doesn’t look good.

Absolutely transforms the truck and it’s over all look.

Hoping I’ll feel as confident off road with it as well. Moving to Utah soon and plan on putting them through their paces. Just an FYI to any looking/debating this size:
After the install, balance and alignment I was getting some rub on the mud flaps and plastics in the wheel well. Took off the mud flaps and used a heat gun to bend back the platic and trimmed off maybe a half inch of the harder stuff in the corner of the fender guards (?). That seemed to do the trick.

Full disclosure. I have NOT put it to full lock and full compression. I took it to a parking lot and did some hard breaking while turning to try and compress that forward side and see if it would rub and pretty sure I heard it make very light contact. With the cab mount. (No CMC). But that was some hard breaking and turning that would be very rare in normal driving conditions, and even that was very slight seeming with no noticeable performance change. Not the most scientific research but hopefully that’s helpful to somebody out there.

Yes! Went up under the bed with no problem!

 

Installed and good to go. No rubbing as it sits now for in-town driving. Won't have an opportunity to get it out to anything other than snow in the next month. They sit an inch away from the cab mount, and about an inch from the UCA on either side. It might end up rubbing but we'll see how it goes in a few weeks. Road noise is minimal, no louder than the Honda Fit with winter tires right beside it. Won't be able to report on fuel economy for a bit yet.

 

I think I’m gonna pull the trigger on them next week.

 

I think you'll be happy with 'em and you shouldn't have too much trouble. Mind you every truck is placed ever so slightly differently in terms of clearances/specs but I've got plenty of space for the time being when most of the wheeling I can do is packed snow.
