As I have mentioned a couple of times in here, I am seriously considering buying a new 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport since it comes standard with Entune Premium with built-in navigation. I learned over the weekend, that Entune can be updated via going to the secure.toyota.com website, but from looking at another poster's comments, people are talking about going out to their trucks and their Entune systems had been updated overnight! So will someone please enlighten me about Entune Premium system and how it updates? Does it require manual update as I was told, via downloading an update to a flash drive, and then going out to your truck to manually update? Or does the Entune system connect to the internet automatically and update itself? If it connects to the internet, how does it connect? Does it connect to your home internet wireless that you program in or is it hardwired to connect to some preprogrammed service that you have to pay for? Thanks in advance!

It connects thru your bluetooth phone. Only updates the Entune system, not the navigation. That has to be done via the dealer.

HacksawMark; so if this updates the Entune system via bluetooth, what about the update one can download from secure.toyota.com, which asks "with or without Navigation"; does THAT downloaded update include then, the update to the navigation system?

No, the navigation update must be purchased from the dealer.

I hate the whole purchase thing with the SD card, I just wish I could use my Waze or GMaps on my display from my phone, seems like that wouldn't be that hard to do, and it stays updated.

Just wait for the 2020 Tacoma.

The new headunit which includes android auto and apple carplay is far superior to the current one and any updates it gets.

Without mentioning the other updates to the vehicle.

I think they removed Pandora an update or two ago. Why, I have no idea.

Entune isn't an app on the head unit, however it is an app you can put on your phone. Entune refers to the stock Toyota head unit in our Tacos.

There are three types of updates:

-- There the Over The Air (OTA) updates like the one that happened today. It patches certain aspects of the system.

-- There are the full FirmWare (FM) updates that you load with a USB stick from the download site:
    https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/getHeadUnits
For a lot of folks, that September 8, 2017 update might still be needed on a lot of head units. Check your version numbers!

-- The third type is the maps update that you purchase separately. The trick there is to eject the card and note the version. Then, find out what version is current. And, search eBay or whatever for folks selling cards that are one version back. Note that these cannot be copied as the software is linked to the serial number of the card itself.

If you're looking at a 2019, I'd expect a great discount considering the changes coming to the 2020s, esp Entune and the power drivers seat.

tonered; I heard about the power seat, which doesn't do a whole lot for me, as I feel that if I cannot adjust my own seat, then what am I doing driving anyway??? But I digress! But what do you know or have you heard, about Entune changes for 2020? I haven't heard anything about that!

The power seat is more about the allowing the possibility of height adjustments. I am happy that the seat works for me but didn't for my wife, which was why I made some spacers for the rear. It made a world of difference:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...rs-25mm-1-lift-to-rear-of-front-seats.571318/

The 2020s will be getting Entune 3 with a bigger screen (same overall size, but no more CD slot) and CarPlay. Possibly Android Auto?

Hmmm. I would really want the CD option, so Entune 3 wouldn't be for me then. I don't know why they don't just go back to good ole regular am/fm/CD radios! I am beginning to think that sometimes, the old ways are better than the new ways! I mean, I plug in my Garmin GPS once a year, and it updates for free. I don't have to take it into a "dealer" to buy another chip or something! I mean, how ridiculous is that? But hey, I DO appreciate the info, as it certainly gives me something to think about! Wow!

Glad to help. CDs are important to some folks.

For me, I just need a Bluetooth connection. The screen is cerrtainly nice for the rear (and front) camera.

The map updates are a corporate decision and is this way with most automotive navi units. Supposedly, the 2020 head unit does away with the map card also. So, there might be some changes on how that is handled.

Does this one update via a phone installed app? I removed the toyota app from my phone after pandora went away, but wouldn't mind keeping up with updates.

I honestly do not know if the OTA update is through the data connection over straight up BT or through the Entune app. Sorry! I wish there were more details on that since I am about done with the Entune app also. They don't update it enough to not be buggy with phone OS updates.
