I have been following TC for the past year and witnessed the meteoritic rise of popularity of the 3rd gen Tacoma and have wondered if this will compromise the future resale value? Thoughts?

Wouldn't meteoritic imply falling and crashing? haha

I doubt resale will be compromised, but I think we are just now seeing if the 3rd gens have the reliability and longevity of the 1st and 2nd gens.

Also with the Ranger coming back and Chevy upping their mid size truck game, I don't think anything will change with Tacomas and their resale.

Well I recently just bought a new Taco, and can confirm you’ll only save 3-4 thousand dollars on a (roughly) 2 year old,15-20k mile used taco in my area. And that was IF you payed them what they wanted on a new one. I haggled them down to 34k on my 19 sport when sticker was 36 something and msrp was almost 39. The extra money I would have saved I decided I’d gladly pay for the extra miles under warranty alone.

I think the 3rd gen guys are safe, especially if these new Colorado/ranger/gladiator trucks have growing pains.

    What the fuck is depreciatation?

And why would a "meteoric rise of popularity of the 3rd generation Tacomas" lead to their future resale values being compromised? Wouldn't this meteoric rise in popularity lead to increased, not compromised, resale values?

The resale value will always be what it is because there are twice as many people who want one...but can’t afford to buy it new.

Main thing that supports used taco prices is limited supply. The constrained supply was due to lack of manufacturing capacity. Toyota is putting on more production capacity and used Taco prices are only going to go in one direction from now on, relative to other midsize trucks.

Well, that's the primary reason I'm looking to buy a Tacoma, since I only need a truck for hauling, for a relatively short period of 1-2 years, and then plan to sell it. If you know someone in auto financing, ask if you can look at lease residual value tables (they have projected residual value (as % of MSRP) of 2019's from 30-60 months in 6 month increments, which are used for leasing contracts). I use that as a proxy for resale value, since I'm not sure what else can be used. Midsize trucks in general have the highest residuals across all time scales, so if nothing else, the rising tide of midsize trucks should float all boats. But Tacoma in particular has the highest residual among midsize trucks, and overall.

Edit to add, as Macstrong said above, if you can get a decent deal on a '19 you can match what a 1-2 yr old low miles tacoma is selling for.

I'd be happy if I can sell my truck for 75% of what I paid for it after 4 years. I do plan to trade it in for a C7 Z06 or GTR.

All trucks will not enjoy the same resale values as has been in the previous years. Why ? Because popularity has grown exponentially. There are so many of them on the road today. Supply / demand. Look at Ford how they dropped many car lines. Now wait til gas prices surge and people want to dump that full size 12 mpg one, or we have a recession and people default on the 80k investment. The market will be flooded at low prices.

My truck only books out at 50-55% of MSRP, 3 years and 100k miles means a lot apparently even though it runs better than new. I also have a SR5 which isn’t the most desirable trim.

Toyota doubled production on the Taco a few months ago. Sooooo that means twice as many tacos a month being pushed out the door which will flood the market and cause resale to go down. Supply will outweigh the demand.Any time I've ever driven by or went to my dealer there was always 15 to 20 tacos on the lot , they were never sold out or couldn't get one. That was before the production recently doubled

I don't think increased production will harm resale much. They sell as fast as they come off the truck around here. I'm not sure 'Yota can meet demand no matter what they do.

i agree with this for sure. It is how it works. When they start making a lot and they then fill up lots and sit longer and longer then they start to discount them more to move them bringing down value. At some point there will be many used on lots and that will trickle also. F150 is leader in sales but the resale is down because so many to choose from in used market and the 10 to 12k discounts on them end of model yr time

Are you sure it doubled? Last year sold 245k Tacoma's, I could be wrong but don't see 500k units selling this year.
