Mobil 1 Full synthetic

Based upon threads I've read here about using synthetic, I've decided upon Mobil 1. My truck just rolled over 80,000 so I'm making the switch.

What kind should I get though? 10w30 or 5w30? I live in kansas city and I'll be in some pretty nasty heat/humidity over the next couple months. Mostly highway miles as I drive 30 miles each way to work.

 

What's your owners manual say about type oil for temperature range? I do believe that generally if you're gonna be in ambient temps below 100 you'd be good with 5W-30, if it's gonna be 100 or above 10W-30. 5W-30 is def gonna give you better gas mileage, even better would be the 0W-30

 

I use the Mobil 1 5W-30 that says it's for SUV/Trucks. I really don't know what they add in it to make it better than the typical Mobil 1???? I think it's in the purple container.

Personally I use Mobile 1, but regardless of what syn oil you use pick one & stay with it the rest of your trucks engine life or as long as you own the truck, it can be engine suicide to start using brand A & then switch to brand B (not that brand A is better than B0 its just crucial to pick one brand & viscocity & stick with it, it seems that syntech oils & lubes are very sensitive & have unfavorable chemical reactions if one of different chem. make up is mixed with another one of different compounds meaning that they may become quite acidic if mixed with one another, therefore turning into a corrosive agent attacking the very metals that they are designed to protect, I've got a few mech. friends & they all agree on these facts: Its not so much the age or mileage on engine that determines syn oil use, its sticking to one brand & never using anything else but the brand of your choosing......

 

5W-30 The 5 indicates how it behaves when cold or at startup. The 30 is the Hi temp number.

Say What? I sitched at least 6 times my trucks got 130K miles and runs like a champ Ive even switched from Syn to Dino and back again no problems at all,using 5W30 weight

I have changed brands and types of oils and run engines over 230k with no problems. If I had not traded it for Obama bucks it would still be running.

 

Yeah, I used to work at Jiffy Lube (which sucks never go there) and it really doesn't make a real difference in switching between brands. But I would (and do) truly always go with synthetic. Throw an additive in (like Lucas engine additive) every once in a while, every couple oil changes and you will have a long lasting engine. You really don't have to change your oil every 3,000, you can go a bit over (I generally go 4,000) with synthetic and be fine.

just go with the 5w30, I think they make it in high mileage blend now.

I didn't say it would happen overnight guys , I'm just going by what I've been told by my people & you can go by what your people tell you, all I know is now all I use is Mobile 1 & I'll stick with it till my truck is dead,or I'm dead (judging from my age this is more likely) or I get rid of it.....

 

I do not know about that. I use 10w-40, 5w-30, and 10w-30. I usually get my mobil 1 synthetic at walmart and sometimes they are out of a particular viscosity so I grab what is left.

I get 200k plus miles out of ALL my vehicles. Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, Tacoma, Acura Integra, My 2002 Toyota Highlander has 150k miles now, etc etc.. Has NO problems at all in my vehicles. I also change my oil anywhere between 3-4k miles.

Switching viscosity's back and forth wont hurt a thing.

 

I wasn't referring to diff. viscocities, I was speaking of mixing or changing brands of synthetic lubes , synthetics are "man made" not a petroleum base, meaning that each manufacturer has their own brand of "secret ingredients", that they protect with copyright, that said, these compounds may & have had a negative reaction when they come in contact with another "foreign" compound left behind from another brand of synthetic lube, remember, we're not talking petroleum oil here, we're talking about chemicals (synthegens/synthetics) Hey I don't think your motor is going to grenade on contact but IF something goes bat shit & some wierd separation of your synlube occures in a rod or main bearing, cam,etc; because of some incompatable chemicals reaction, well the damage is done, are you going to spin a bearing or cook some other component immediately ? Most likely not, but the scoring has begun, thats the info I get & it made sense to me , but whatever I just use the Mobile1 & stay with it & if the info I get is wrong, no biggie, but if its right,well I'm covered either way, those internal bearings rod,crank,cam, are not very hard believe it or not & score pretty damned easy too...

 

Thanks for the replies everyone. I grabbed a container of 5w30 mobil one full synthetic that has the truck and suv high mileage logo on it.

Pretty sure I'm going to stick with this brand anyway. But it's good to know I have options. $21 for the bottle isn't that bad in my opinion. They had three different versions of the oil filter at wally world and I went with the mid grade option.

 

That's a synthetic blend, partially synthetic, not full synthetic, but it will do you fine.
