So, went to change my oil and filter yesterday.

Drained the oil, drained filter oil, popped on a new o-ring, then the problem....

Whichever Toyota tech (Lemon Grove Toyota here in SD, CA) worked on my car, overtightened the hell out of the oil filter housing, even snapping off 2 of the little detents/ (?) that allow you to remove it with the filter wrench.

Any recommendations on how to remove? The wrench won't even sit on the housing correctly with those pieces snapped off.

I, of course, had to add new oil but the old filter is still in there. Am I able to run it for a few days until I can figure out a way to remove the housing? Will I be able to replace the oil filter without all oil coming out?

Strap wrench should do the trick for removal. Once you do it off, all you will lose will the ~2/3 quart in the filter housing.

Oops, I checked, but apparently not well enough. I have a couple additional questions that were not answered!

do you happen to have a small oil filter strap wrench that will fit on it, such as this? How about a huge pair of channel locks?

I'm going to have to purchase one...am I able to replace that oil filter (once I get it off) without losing all oil? Maybe just a top off for any residual lost?

yeah i deal with this daily. Toyota made a shitty plastic housing cap and they do break very easy. the sad thing is there is a Chinese aluminum housing that is much better.

So, am I able to keep the new oil in it and replace the oil filter after a couple days of driving, or do I have to replace all oil again?

You don’t need to purchase anything. It doesn’t matter if you fuck up the old filter. Use large channel locks or just ram a big flat head into the side of it and twist it off.
The new one should just go on hand tight assuming you have average arm strength

However much oil you drain out of the filter you'll need to add back. Sorry, I can't tell you how much that is.

Yes if it is a good quality filter like OEM you can change the filter a bit later and just top off the oil

I had the same problem the first time I did my one oil change. I ended up refilling it with oil and taking it to the dealership. The mechanic at the dealership let me watch him remove the filter housing. He just used a longer ratchet wrench than I had to remove the filter housing. Also, he didn't have to drain all of the oil before removing the filter housing. Only a small amount of oil came out that needed to be replaced.

The next time I changed my oil, I bought a longer ratchet and was able to remove the filter housing. I'm wondering if the metal filter housings are easier to remove than the plastic ones.

Ordered the metal housing unit...going to try with a breaker and trust the two remaining tabs will hold. If not, I'll try a strap wrench and hope that does the trick.

    Thanks for your help guys

Bring it to the dealer that did the last oil service. Tell the service adviser what you saw. They will need to look at it and they should replace the housing on their dime. If they don't want to do that, then you have 4 options:
    1. Let it drop and move on
    2. Speak with the service manager
    3. Speak with the GM
    4. File a complaint with corporate
Numbers 1 or 2 would be your best choices IMO. Numbers 3 or 4 is complete overkill and pretty dumb with this particular situation.

You're better off getting the aluminum housing anyhow. I'm swapping my housing after my last Toyota Care oil change is used up.
