Stock 1st Gen Tweeter Question

I upgraded my stock audio system with a Sony MEX-XT120BT (45x4 RMS, 100x4 peak) deck, and four Fosgate R168X2 coaxial speakers, and I simply disconnected the harnesses for the stock tweeters since my coaxial speakers are 2-way, thus have a tweeter built-in.

Did I do that correctly? Or would it be better to upgrade/replace the stock tweeters, rather than exclude them?

The sound is now much better than stock, and has plenty of treble freqs, but the "sound stage" (if I'm using that term correctly) seems a bit low to the ground, not hitting me in the face/ears as much as I would like.

You really need a DSP and amplification on each driver to do much more. Improving frequency response through EQ can help a bit. But if you can't control crossover points, time alignment, fine EQ and phase it'll be hard to get it much better. Err, if you can use a built in crossover & amplify the coax woofer and tweeter separately there would be another level of control. Might need a small amp for that.

And you can just leave stock tweeter unplugged. No need to double up there.

Nice to think that thing does 100W x 4, but it's more like 17 x 4 most likely. 100W x 4 would be at least a 25A current draw. I doubt the fuse on that thing is bigger than 10A.

 

Thanks for the advice on the tweeter. As far as the deck--you seem to know more than I do about these but it has a 15A fuse and a built-in amp that requires it's own direct battery connection if used in a circuit rated for less than 15A. Sony says it does 45 watts RMS (100 x 4 peak). I don't know/care if it actually ever puts out 100 watts x4, or even 45 for that matter. I do know that it gets VERY loud while still keeping its composure. Sounds really good for a $250 system (speakers and deck), and I didn't have to pay anyone to install any of it. My only gripe would've been the lack of deep bass, but the EQ settings really helped w that and the speakers seem to be loosening up a bit with use, which I dig. It actually hits pretty hard considering it's just 6x8's with no subs.

 

Aah, it's one of those with an extra power source - maybe it does make more power. Fusing works out @ 45W. Hard to do deep bass with this setup, but good to hear it's getting you some bass.

Love the truck - mine's just like it. Same color & all. Wishing it was an auto anymore, but great truck.

 

Yeah this setup certainly isn't setting off anyone's car alarms, but has enough bass to fill out the sound and make music enjoyable. Driving down to Death Valley later this month and the stereo upgrades will really help out during the 20+ hour round trip drive.

The truck is a lot of fun. Just got it back in January. Bought it from the original owner w all service records. Garage kept, super clean, only 100k miles. Very well cared for by a nice old man. I replaced all the shocks w new Bilstein 4600s, new General leaf springs, and a fresh set of 265/75/16 Duratracs. Also found a perfect paint/vehicle matched Snugtop Xtravision camper shell on Craigslist, gently used. Built a nice little sleeping platform. It's a real nice setup.

 

Sweet setup! I've always wanted to build up a platform like that.

Enjoy Death Valley. So much cool stuff there. I think my favorite so far is the Mosaic Canyon breccia. Zabriskie Point is pretty cool too. Can't wait to get back there & do more exploring!

Mosaic and Zabriskie are both great spots. So are 20 Mule Team Road and Artist's Palette. I've been down to DV a couple times already but only in a Honda Civic (and once on bicycles). So we've seen all the easily accessible touristy stuff. This time we'll be hitting the backcountry and as many high clearance 4x4 trails as we have time for!
