What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Got one side of the bed cut today. Have a new bed frame (the kind you sleep in) to put together this afternoon.

 

No, I don't but you don't need it. Just follow the video and definitely read the comment I pinned. Getting the differential out and back in is way easier when you lift the engine a bit and loosen the metal vacuum and breather lines on top of the diff. I've now pulled a front diff 4 times and the tips I share in the pinned comment make all the difference in the world. It changes it from a battle to relatively easy thing to do.

 

Does anybody know what gear oil goes in the diff on a 99 tacoma?

 

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 in the front diff and 80w-90 in the rear diff.

 

Would you happen to know how much goes in?

 

Front diff takes 1.2 quarts. The rear diff takes 2.9 quarts if you have a locker and 2.6 quarts if you don't have a locker. If you have an owner's manual, all this information is in the back of the manual.

Must be easier on the 4cyl. Other than my lack of strength to bench the awkward thing off my chest I didn't have too much issue getting it in there. It is something I don't want to do again though. Probably my least favorite thing I've done in the truck so far.

 

Yeah, I unbolted all the mounts and took the breather hoses loose of the body and it practically fell out

 

I dont have a locker. 3 quarts wasnt spilling out of the fill hole, maybe 3/16" under the line.

 

Just FYI, and by no means trying to be a smartass- but if this sort of info is needed, any decent parts guy can look it up in his computer for you. Finding a good one and developing a relationship with him is worth the effort.

Just so when you have a situation that needs an answer NOW, someday, you don't have to wait. Like my dumb ass doing work on the truck I need to get to work in Monday morning, at 11pm at night.

 

its a tool box and it's not air tight.

 

You can run either or in both diffs. No need to run seperate weights in front and rear. They are so close it's just dumb to do so. I'm running

75w-90 Redline in both front and rear on my 99. Trans and t-case get Redline MT-90.

 

Anyone have a trail gear rear bumper and want to help this guy out? Sounds like hes having filment issues, is that common?

Maybe you should rethink your word choice. I quoted the Toyota spec right out of the owner's manual. Can you safely run

75w-90 in both the front and rear diffs? Yeah, I would say so. Would I call somebody dumb if they used 75w-90 in the front and 80w-90 in the rear? No, I wouldn't especially since that's the spec Toyota calls for.

 

Be a little less sensitive about people's word choices, this is the internet after all. That wasn't directed at you specifically, more at the fact that Toyota decided to use different specs for the front and rear that were so close, it was dumb that they did so. If you don't like that word, well, sorry but I'm not going to stop using it just for you. I respect your knowledge and all the how-to vids you do but I won't change me for anyone.

 

I run 85-140 in my diffs what does that make me?



I think I've got all the kinks of my stage 1 turbo build worked out today.

Not stock would be my guess.

 

I run 85-140 as well, that’s what was recommended to me from the diff shop that added my gears, before that’s I ran 75-90 in both stock.
