Any insulation is good and more is better!

 

Do you heat the garage?

 

Our garage is exposed to the outside on 3 sides which makes it an ice box in colder weather. Truthfully, I don't know if they even insulated the walls they finished (I'm assuming so since they partly share a wall with the house). So far, it makes a noticeable difference in temperature and I'm only halfway done.

 

It makes a difference, that's apparent already. If I owned the place and could amortize the cost, I would redo the attic with as much as I could stuff up there.

 

Nope, garage is not heated. If I faced South, East or West and could get some daylight on the garage door then I could use that as a heat source and then the insulation to trap it in. I just don't have that luxury.

 

Is your garage attached or detached? Sunlight isn’t going to offer much as a heat source, especially being uninsulated. If you want some heat in there just grab a portable propane torpedo heater. One I got works well and heats my uninsualted garage great. It can be 0 outside and I can get it up to around probably 60. My garage is only about 300 sqft but those heaters are probably the best bang for your buck, if you just want to be able to do some work out in the garage during the winter months.

 

Yes, it's attached. about 1 wall is attached to the house, the rest is exposed and not insulated. I do use a propane heater today and agree, I can get it plenty comfortable in there quickly when I need to. My main thing is I would like to have a way to keep it 45-80 degree's year round. In the summer it becomes sweltering in there, and in the winter it can get below freezing. outside of insulating the walls and running HVAC to it, I dont think it is possible.

 

I think you’ll notice a big difference if you properly insulate it. Is the attic portion vented? If so a gable vent or ridge vent? If you get proper venting in there and insulate the entire garage you’ll notice a big difference, both summer and winter. Ridge vent will be your best solution. If you have both seal up the gable. Air will just come in the gable and out the ridge vent. Not pulling air from the sofits. Also make sure your sofits are actually open or ported. A lot of time people just place the vented plastic or aluminum sheets over top of wooden sofits that are sealed. Not allowing air to flow properly. If you get it insulated and vented pretty well you could also run a heat duct out there. Won’t heat it up a lot but will help a little.

 

The attic space above the garage is not insulated, I was at one time considering having blown in insulation blown in just like the rest of the house has. It is a ridge vented home, it breaths rather well actually. The structure is only 5 years old.

The comfort difference will pay for the blower rental, especially in the summer. Make sure you leave eave ventilation via baffles to work with your ridge vent. Might as well insulate the walls while ur at it

 

Freezers are insulated too . No heat supply means no heat to retain

 

Do blown in insulation and batts. I think 8” is only around ~R30. Ideally you’d probably want around an R value of a 45 in your zone.

 

So my son decided to rip the seal off our French doors, is this seal available at Lowe’s or Home Depot?
Looks like it attached to the second door, not the primary. It’s the black piece at the very bottom, where the doors meet.

 

You see this is what my thinking is, unless my frame of thought is completely skewed from what you mean. My logic is that I don't have a heat supply in the garage, it is just an open space. I know insulating will help make it a little more comfortable. But enough to really justify the cost is where I am at. My wall is sheeted and painted right now. I would have to tear down all sheetrock and they rerock the walls after putting bats in. I question if it's worth the effort and cost.

Insulation won't help much unless there is a heat source . The house will leak a bit of heat into the garage but not much

 

It’ll be more comfortable in the summer and a lil baseboard heater could take the chill off a lot easier if you insulate....just sayin lol

 

I know someone mentioned that we have appliance techs in here. I have a few questions:

How bad is this besides the obvious.



My Kenmore stove- 7ish years old. Backstory: The insulation got singed a couple years ago while cooking thanksgiving dinner. As far as I can tell, grease that has spilled over the burners over the years has dripped onto the insulation which caused the initial flammable area. The original flare up happened when we were using the oven (broiler maybe). A scare, but I pulled the top, put out the embers and vacuumed out any remaining ashes or singed parts of the insulation. Then nothing since then. Daily use of the burners and the oven including the broiler function although I was always hyper aware of anything that smelled like burning. Tonight while cooking dinner it happened again. No huge flame but a constant ember and ensuing smoke filled the kitchen. Again, I pulled the top and put it out.

My question is: since the insulation has been compromised can it be replaced? The stove otherwise is in great shape and practically new. We did buy the extended warranty but it was only for 5 years so it’s over and done with. I hate feeling like I need to keep an eagle eye on the stove every time we use it for fear of burning down my house. I’m wondering if this is a common repair (or even if it would be cost effective since the only way I can see to replace the insulation is complete disassembly). Or if I should cut my losses and buy new.

We just replaced a washer and are trying to avoid buying another appliance if we can avoid it. But also I’d rather the expense of a stove than burning my shit down.

Today I insulated my garage, and the rest of the house too. But, this is what excites me the most. A garage with a heater and insulation is a luxury I've never had before. No more freezing my ass off in the winter.

 

Looks to be an easy fix( grease will continue to catch it fire).....but you can buy the batting...I dont know your specific model but a quick search on kennmore brought this up.
