I wonder if it'll be possible to buy a replacement 2020 stock head unit to swap into my 2017. Does anyone know if they retail for a lot?

I didn't notice anything different after the update. However, I don't use AM, FM, XM, Slacker etc. I've got my music collection on a USB thumbdrive.

I looked on the Toyota.com site for online parts pricing. It was showing the current HU at about $5k, which is laughably ridiculous.

I also looked on car-part.com for salvage HUs for fun. They were running at about $1,200. Which is also stupid money given the aftermarket alternatives that still allow the use of the steering wheel controls.

Since the 2020s are not out yet, it is unknown if it is PnP or not. Some folks with inside info said that it might be. We'll have to see who is brave enough when the 2020s ship in August.

There is also some >>> speculation <<< that our HUs might get upgraded to Entune 3 with CP and / or AA around the end of the year. Very much a "we'll see."

I have heard that the Entune premium from 2018 sells for like $3000. Ridiculous in my opinion.

I've seen quite a few stock head units for sale locally here so i figured theres got to be enough people buying new trucks and swapping out the head units right away. I'll just wait till one shows up for sale used and pick it up for like $500

I'm aware of those Apps, but I don't always listen to Pandora, sometimes I listen to FM radio. I don't want Pandora to open on my phone every time I turn on my Truck, only when I want to use it.

Because it's in there, apps can be changed without notice.

It doesn't matter what the OEM HU will cost because no one is going to be buying them from these websites.

Just buy the takeoff when people upgrade theirs. I would be surprised if they sell for above $1k on ebay.

The only issue might be a shortage since people won't have as much incentive to upgrade if android auto/carplay is built in.

I’m no expert, but on my MX5 it requires a new USB port to be installed and a software update. Costs about $400 to have the dealer do it. I haven’t decided yet if I think it’s worth the trouble.

If there’s no hardware involved I can’t imagine it would cost too much to update the software, but maybe there’s some complex factor I’m not aware of?

Car radio is to non-electronics guys like the pancreas is to non-endocrinologists...ridiculously complex, mysterious, and for most of us best left to the experts or people with a lot of time to research the internet.

Interesting. I just got an update to the Entune app on Android.

No change log there either. LoL.

The current Entune radio doesn't have the hardware required for CarPlay, as the USB port is data only. It could work with Android Auto though. The OS on the radio is QNX (blackberry), and if rooted could be manipulated into accepting an install of the Android application for Android Auto.

@jcayce was actually working on this exact project.

Have you seen an recent updates from @jcayce ? The last one that I saw was about him getting an ESL cert taking up his time.

This exactly. Also, Pandora is a third party app and from what I read/heard Toyota lost partnership with. That’s why it is gone.

That's not at all what I was referring to, I was asking @daddy_o why he thought it was a joke. Toyota should strive to better a product they put out, not cripple it. Pandora was the flagship of Entune 2.0, and was very useful (station selection, like/dislike, no messing with your phone, just put it in the charging cradle). They did a disservice to 2016-2018 Tacoma owners by removing it without providing a replacement that was on par or better.

The Entune phone app update is what triggers the HU's Entune update. Next time you get in your truck after the phone app is updated, you'll get the notification on the HU that there's an update to be installed, assuming your BT is on and connected.

Sorry, but it was the other way around.

The HU updated late yesterday afternoon when I drove the Taco for the first time yesterday.

The phone app just updated this morning a few minutes before that post.

For the previous four OTA HU updates since I had the Taco, I do not recall the phone app updating just prior to the OTA. I tend to remember patterns like that but could be wrong.

Interesting. What I described is how it has always happened for me. Since I don't have auto-update turned on for my phone apps, I always know when my apps are updated - and I always know after my phone gets the Entune update that my truck will get it the next time I'm in it. Weird.
