I put an aftermarket antenna in and it ended up rusting out the inside of the mount. It was a pain to unscrew that deal. I eventually realized that the tool for opening the case of wrist watches fits perfectly. It is $5 at walmart! I figured that out after completely destroying the darn thing and taking a dremel to it to get it off.

It snapped off. Honestly, I think the car wash's equipment was garbage but in the future, I will never leave it on while carwashing.

Old thread but bought the Amazon tool and we will see if this will work. I sprayed it with a Teflon lube a day before I’m expecting it to arrive. Maaco didn’t do me any favors on this one.

I had driven through the same 2 car washes about 30+ times in total. One day the attendant asked if I wanted him to remove the antenna, had never been asked before. I told him nah, never had an issue, been here a ton. 45 seconds later my antenna was ripped off and I could hear it beating down the entire side of my truck as the brush spun round and round... wonder how many cars it hit after mine?

I've yet to replace mine. I couldn't get the thing apart without that tool. The threads are boned, so just putting a new antenna in wouldn't work. Need the whole assembly, like posted in the products discussed thing at the bottom of the page.

You don't need to take off the beauty ring. Get a new antenna whip and screw it into the hole. If the threaded piece of the old antenna is still in there, soak with Kroil, then carefully use a left hand drill bit. Worked like a charm for me.

Mine ripped the antenna out, taking the threads with it.

    minor tweaks
I always took mine off at the CW, mostly because I've seen a few broke antennas from those places. Since I almost never use the radio function I just picked up one of those short 5~6" antennas, I can't tell a difference in reception but I'm sure there is, mainly I no longer need to pull it off which got to be annoying to me.
