So being a tech myself oil leaks are a gray area when vehicle is under warranty. Unless the oil leak is a visible drip we are instructed not to "upsell/inform" about it under warranty by the manufacturer. So lets say front cover has residue present, we make a note on the hard copy of RO to monitor it next visit. So technically the dealership is correct in saying it has to be a drip so to speak. Blame Toyota not the dealer as they have to play within the rules.

My Tacoma's front cover had visible drips off P/S pump & oil pan onto skid plate so it was a slam dunk diagnosis.

Okay makes sense to me now. Thank you for clearing that up. Puts me at ease that they are definitely going to come back and tell me it’s a leak because the oil was all over the P/S pump. Not sure about the oil pan and skid plate but it was at night when I took a look. Thanks again for the informative update my dude!

This right here. The fan and freeway speeds will never let it leak on the ground it will just end up caked all over you engine, frame, transmission and steering rack etc.
Maybe they consider that a rust proofing feature

    Verdict...
They added some dye to the oil and cleaned the area. Ran the truck, there is seapage but not technically a leak. So they told me to keep driving it and when it leaks they’ll fix it because I have the 100K warranty. If I didn’t I would be SOL! They said that Toyota got really strict wirh paying out warranties that there rules and guidelines for what a warranty constitutes have gotten stupid.

And this is directly from the general manager of the service department.

Well don’t wait till the last day. The repair requires tearing down a lot of the motor and it would suck being out of warranty and finding out the techs did a rush job that caused other problems which then would be yours to foot the bill for.

Trust me ever time I have to bring it in for service I’m going to ask them to check the leak. Thank God I have the 100K extended warranty. Even the service manager said, eventually it will get worse and we will have to do it.

The service manager just called me and said basically the same thing.

They are going to look at mine closer next week and try to fight with toyota to get it fixed out of warranty at no cost to me.

At the very least it will be documented and he told me to go ahead and open a case with corporate.

Just changed my oil and took a looksy, I have the same thing happening. It’s going to the dealer Monday for new rear axle / brake vibration issue so I’ll point it out and report back then.

Probably caused by your cold air intake and cat back exhaust.

I just spent an hour on the phone with Toyota Corporate.....They stated that the dealership adding dye to my oil and sending me on my way is part of the diagnostic. That when I see more seepage or leakage to come back so they can see if it’s worse and then they’ll go ahead and fix it. Total BS! I’m so aggravated
    :annoyed:

I changed my oil today and noticed a leak. Sent pics to a friend who is a master mechanic for Toyota and he said it was the timing cover. It’s under warranty so no sweat but I was disappointed to have leaks with only 45k on the truck.
