Better to build a prerunner. Bigger front travel numbers without front axles and cheaper.

My Prerunner gets me where I need to go with about 350-400 pounds of less stuff to break. Majority of my driving is on a road, most of that is on dry pavement. I take it out in the fields on our farm and you simply pay attention to where you are going and what you are doing, use a bit of common sense and I get by just fine. No regrets at all.
Better tires have been a benefit (thanks to my son). There have been times this winter where I have looked outside and said “Nope, I will wait until the road grader goes by.” before even trying to get out. Rear locker and a bit of momentum have let me get up the ice covered hill at my parents.
Plus there are times where I get 24mpg or better.

That's probably why the TRD Pro Tundra doesn't even have a rear diff lock.

Here's my reasoning as to why I got my TRD Off-Road 4X2. I had a Mazda3 hatch and I wanted to be able to have the off-road capability to go camping and such, obviously the Mazda wasn't going to cut it. I don't plan on rock crawling or getting into any kind of terrain that is super rugged. I don't plan on overlanding either. I live in the Phoenix area and my Tacoma is my daily. Most people I talked to say that 4X4 isn't worth it. Besides I got the rear locker which will help. Out of all the times I've been off-roading I've maybe ever need to use 4WD maybe once or twice and that was prior to hitting the obstacles, more just precautionary. Everyone is in a different boat I guess.

It isn't even about not being able to afford 4wd, for me it was more about not needing it. Not wanting to pay for it. And not wanting to drive a truck that steers like an ox cart. The 2wd drives a ton better.

Make no mistake, 4wd is expensive. You pay for it when you buy the truck. You pay to maintain it. And you pay more for fuel because it gets worse fuel economy.

I take my Limited offroad 3 out of 4 weekends. The only time I got stuck, I was doing something really dumb, knew I might, and had a buddy with a 4wd F150 close by. Although his Polaris side by side pulled me out no problem.

I've been out in the Mojave desert doing a bunch of hunting on back dirt roads. I'm more than happy w/ fuel efficient 4cyl, 2WD and high ground clearance. Pretend LSD is plenty.

FYI, tons of locals prowl the desert successfully in older, faded 4cyl 2wd vehicles. I guess, because we've been everywhere in our region many times, and know where we can and can't go off the top of our heads. I was crawling around a couple days ago in a region that only had dirt bikes and 4WD's, and doing just fine.

I have a 4x2 offroad. I used to have a 2nd gen prerunner and reading internet forums is the only reason I ever felt bad not having a 4x4. So I bought an FJ Cruiser 4x4 and NEVER needed the 4x4. I used a few times at the flea market parking lot but I didn't really need it. In Houston there isn't anywhere to offroad unless you have private land or time to drive up marble falls 3 hours away. The only time I have ever got stuck was twice in my ranger in mud parking lots, and once at the beach in my ranger, if I had a locker I could get out. So for me I really liked the offroad because it came with a locker, and the bilstein's ride noticeably better than the hitachi's.

If you don't need the 4x4 or use it than the 4x2 is better in every way, mpg, towing, payload, etc. The only thing it isn't better in is resale value but you pay more to get it in the first place.

    Yes
I’d rather have 4x4 and not need it than need it and not have it.

    But that’s just my opinion.

I’ve been in many situations (aside from intentional off-roading) that warranted the use of 4wd.

I might be influenced by my inner city living, but I liked the looks of some of the old Rivieras.

Exactly what I thought. The same person who buys a v6 mustang or camaro to “save money on gas”

Every time it snows and I pass by pickups putting chains on I laugh.
