Was doing one of those mind numbing drives across Kansas, Nebraska, or SD, can't remember which but they're about the same, and I look out my drivers window and there's a B1 at 500ft or less right beside me, then the second one comes by a little lower. Thank goodness no one else was on the road because between scaring the crap out of me and me wanting to see more had me in the median pretty quick.

Sounds like they were playing with their TF/TA radar.

I don't know what they were doing, it was a stretch of vast nothing. I've made that drive probably 100 times and it's the only time I saw B1s flying along the interstate.

    Neat story.

Two years ago we were illegally camping at a beautiful mountain bald here in East TN and late night a black military chopper (very quiet) flew up the ridge directly in front of us and hovered around 75-100 feet directly above (Rotor wind was blowing our shit everywhere). The chopper proceeded to touchdown beside my truck with spot light illuminated, but then throttled up and was gone as fast as it arrived. We hardly slept that night

I'm no aviation expert but how on earth could a helicopter be so quiet? The rotor wash threw our stuff everywhere yet we were still conversing at a normal tone.
Our best guess was some sort of drug enforcement agency that had never seen activity up there before?

    Slow day at work...

They have them. Some were used in the Bin Laden raid. Remember that Ft. Bragg is over in North Carolina, and well within helicopter range. Could have been black ops types looking to screw with someone, or DEA types like you thought.

    "Hey, you think they're fucking?"
"Let's drop in and find out."

If it's the DEA, them "revenooers" got all fancy. Of course, they aren't looking for moonshine anymore. As marijuana becomes more legal, the tax man is gonna want his tax.

More likely it was a training flight out of ft Campbell. That is the training area for a couple of units up there. You probably surprised them having a camper up there in an LZ they use for training. Crazy experience if you are not used to being stalked like a criminal.

Hell yeah it was terrifying. There were three of us; my buddy pulled is .357, my girlfriend jumped in the truck, and I ran into the trees

I'm not sure who was right in that situation haha

One of the coolest things was living next to Mac Dill AFB except for the noise during Desert Storm/Desert Shield and seeing all the F-16's take off burners lit like candles......

Not if your tent is near the flight line and your ass just pulled a 16 hour shift.

I think his work is awesome. I also had this painting in my room growing up by him. No idea where I got them and no idea where they are now (unfortunately).

I'd guess SD because Ellsworth AFB where a lot of them are stationed is near Rapid City, SD

Prob the 160th out of Ft Campbell, KY. Those dudes are super sneaky in their little birds too. Might have been a training flight for "Jedi Rides" based on his description of the noise.

I'm thinking probably you in the trees. Not too sure you'd wanna be an "armed combatant" when the dudes likely in the back got out.

Not sure if "silent" but they really do help the rotor signature at a distance. You can hear most choppers from quite a ways out, but the EH-101s have these rotor tips and they can be quite a bit closer before you notice them.

Anybody ever been out to the Edwards AFB photo Test Range where they have the scrapped out B-58 hustler and the B-52 carcasses and stuff? Know if it is publicly accessible?
