Blinking AC light??? Please help

Had my AC on and suddenly it started blinking and wasn't cooling. I clicked the button on/off and it has been working since. This is the second time it's happen...what does it mean. AC seems to be working well other than that...couldn't find this mentioned in the manual.

I had a Camry that used to do that. However, it only happened when it was raining hard or kicking up standing water. I couldn't figure it out either. My only guess was (still is) that water got somewhere and caused the compressor to turn off for a minute. It was as if turning it off and on again acted as some sort of reset. Sometimes I would have to wait for a minute or two depending on how wet it was but it always seemed to work after a little while. The AC never had any issues beyond that and I traded it in for my Taco with 117,000 miles on it.

Common problem with Toyota. With an intermittent problem like that where it quits working then later on works okay, clear sign of a bad relay. I'd rather that be the problem with the AC than anything else since it's the easiest/cheapest to replace.

 

If you could provide some insight on how to diagnose the problem or where the switch is located, I'd appreciate it. I thought maybe its cause my cabin filter is dirty or clogged....haven't messed with it ever.

 

This has happened to me twice since I got my truck, last time was over a year ago. I just turned the temperature knob to hot then cold and it stopped blinking. I'm not too worried about it.

 

Well you don't want to just go replacing parts without truly diagnosing the problem. But that's just my guess without ever looking at it. Even the first steps in the diagnostics section for the A/C in the service manual are to check the fuses and relays. It's just that all the Toyota models seems to have problems with these relays sticking (and since it's intermittent, that's why this is my guess). The relay is in the engine bay fuse box.

 

I have an alldatadiy subscription for my truck. The alldata manual says that the following conditions will cause the hvac controls to shut off the AC.

Evap outlet air temp too low (must be a sensor somewhere)

Compressor speed does not match engine speed (slipping comp clutch?)

Refrigerant pressure too high or too low (overcharged? Leaking? bad pressure switch?)

Engine speed is too low

Rapid acceleration occurs (LOL)

This is the issue. It could be several things:

1. Belt slipping as when it gets wet.
2. Defective AC Clutch.
3. The AC Compressor is on the way out and seizing.

Pray for it to be # 1 or # 2.

 

On the face of the evap. Cycles the compressor somewhere around 36-38*F to prevent ice formation, which of course will stop air flow.

While the 'rapid' part is funny............

I believe the ECU will cut the compressor when the TPS shows WOT.

However, as soon as you come off WOT, the compressor should be released.

So, if you have a flashing light just cruising around, this one isn't your issue.

 

I have this same issue, but it only happens when it been sitting in the hot sun all day. After pushing the button a few times it starts working normally. Haven't checked the relay though. My guess is the pressure is to high from the heat that it can't work. A/c blows super cold still after 11 years and never been serviced. If it were the compressor wouldn't squeal if it was going out?

Was just reading a post about the A/C light blinking by member N75, he found part of his clutch was NG and found a inexpensive replacement part, here's the link:

Have blinking AC light but only when it rains,,,, turned off for while, then ON again and worked fine for a season. Next season cold air blowing on drivers side, HOT blowing on passenger's,,,,,any idea what cause is? OR how to repair without dismantling or replacing entire system????? TIA
