The MPGs on the 2.7 vary based on all sorts of variables, the size and weight of tires, armor mods etc but the values are dependable, it’s a set compression ratio. You get what you get, and it’s spot on for an in-line 4 at 95x95 (stroke and bore) moving this size truck. The engine itself is impressive in materials, architecture and simplicity.

The v6 on the other hand is harder to pin down because it’s compression ratio changes with power demand, and different drivers have different demand patterns. All things being equal, at WOT, the 6 has more HP and burns a significant amount more fuel. At a speed maintaining throttle position, the compression ratio drops and the mpgs go up, the power output goes down. The average between those two is the estimated mpgs for the 6. You don’t get the estimated top horsepower with the estimated mpgs. That’s not how that works.

    Mine's right around 22-25 mpg.
Factors: 265/76 16's, essentially at sea level with very mild inclines, usually below 70mph.

Getting 23.x on highway runs, 18-19 around town. I'm content with the 4 banger but if I had to do over again i'd add a couple of grand and get the v6.

I, know I posted this elsewhere but this time I even did the pencil math, verified by calculator. My Ultraguage and pencil calculations are dead even, 18.4 since winter, usually right at 19.0. Yet I have a truck that sits higher and heavier wheel set than stock (TRD 6112/5160, and trd OR wheel set 265/70/16) and no air dam.

If I’m reading that right it’s not comparable.

    2018 v6 over 2,000,000 miles reported
    2018 4 banger 56,000 miles reported

    Not enough data

    I agree with

I agree with stun here on this point. But aside from bench testing. Real world drivers would all prefer the v6 because the mpg is too close to call better or worse and the amount of “available” HP and torque vs the 4 is overwhelming. Yes at WOT the 6 will use more. So will the 4.
A DC LB 4 with any cargo and passengers with an indentical set up with a v6 ... the choice is clear. We’ll both be at the fuckin gas station at the same time cause tacos suck on gas period. But I didn’t by it for mpg. We all know why we bought our trucks.

For sure it's not perfect, but it's something at least. Toyota sells far more v6s so it's not surprising there more data for them.

Go to Fuelly and get real info....

My 2019 4x4 AC w/auto gets 22 mpg if I baby it and drive like grandma. Key is keeping it under 2,000 rpms. Tacomas are not fuel efficient at all. My F150 w/ V8 got about the same mileage (but it was 2wd) and had way more power. I have 4,500 miles on the little 4 banger and expect to get slightly better mpgs as the miles pile up.

There are a few actual ways to get real world figures on mpgs. The info screen isn’t one of them.

My overall tank average varies all the time. Seeing the trip averages just adds to the confusion...
I went hunting yesterday and averaged 19 or 20 mpg getting out into the desert. On the way back, I was WAY over 30mpg coming home. So, I guess I averaged 25mpg.
In my truck, mileage varies wildly, depending on what I'm doing. Climbing into the Sierras, I'm under 19mpg. Coasting back out, I'm way above 30. Good thing I can average 2 weird numbers. 2WD, 6foot bed, stock steel tires, driving conservatively, not speeding, easy on throttle.
My computerized tank average is sitting at about 23, but wanders and creeps higher and lower.

I'm very happy with the 4 cyl. engine and ground clearance. The only TSS I wanted available in my truck is Tungsten Super Shot.

Yep, got mine because it is a relatively simple truck engine with the best chance at long term reliability. Low operating/maintenance costs as well.

Wouldn't mind the power of the 6, but coming from a TDI I didn't want all the CARB driven tech in the 3.5.

The MPG is too close to even argue about.
