Black residue on dipstick? New oil

Does anyone else notice black residue after wiping off the dipstick even with brand new oil? This has happened every time I’ve checked the oil since new, what is causing this? Is it normal?

 

Normal. You always have a little residue left, no big deal, don’t worry about it.

 

Mine does the same, even has metal shavings on the tip everytime.

likely just that useless stick scraping the inside of the tube and causing small metal flakes. Try a good magnifying glass....

Is that a normal condition for these engines or does that mean there’s blow by at the piston rings?

 

All piston driven engines have blow by at the piston rings...those gases are picked up by the pvc and sent back to combustion chamber to be burnt. I would suggest an oil catch can but not interested in a debate with all the haters on here regarding catch cans.

 

Mine looks the same. I think this is normal.

 

Brand new here, and some of the same. Just keep an eye on it, look for excessive oil consumption, and ask your dealer next time you swing by there.

 

Didn’t burn a drop of the previous oil that was in there, stayed the same for the 5,000 miles I ran it.

I have replaced the OEM oil plug with a magnetic oil plug and never have seen any metal shavings on it.

 

I was thinking the OEM drain plug was already magnetic, I checked the oil filter element and it was clean, I also wiped out the housing with a clean paper towel and no black residue.

I’m thinking it’s the dip stick scraping the inside of the tube like over60 suggested because if I run it several times through the tube it gets worse.

 

All my Toyotas have looked like that after an oil change. Fresh oil and prominently defined metal particulate. Try measuring our oil when it is empty during an oil change. No oil on the stick and metal particulates. Definitely from the tube.

 

I have the same on mine. I woulnt worry about it. Like others said its probably the dipstick rubbing. Good luck !

 

Soot from gasoline direct injection. Normal in the engine, these are jaged carbon particles from incompletely burned fuel. The soot is picked up by oil as it lines the cylinder wall and is scrapped back down into the internals.
Soot is not measured in most used oil analysis. Yet it is hard and abrasive.
You can confirm It is not iron or steel with a magnet.

For comparison my 4 runner with the 1gr fe standard fuel injection) does not produce this.

 

If you must really find out if it's the tube filings, how about pulling the stick and running a cup or so of clean oil down it.
Wait ten minutes or so (beer time)…….Now check it again..?? Just a thought, but maybe take the edges off the stick while yer waiting and having a beer..?

Use some fine sandpaper and take off the edges of the dip stick. Mine is rounded up nicely. No scraping.
