    Her Outback.

Cap is gone. Won’t have to drain much now at least. Her cousin has a Forester with the same engine I think, so I’m gonna see how loose / easy her cap is to make sense of it. I don’t see how this thing explodes off.

Wonder if a Preston county drug zombie got a hold of it? Or did ur wife inadvertently piss someone off?
Seems unlikely that it would run off on its own lol

Knowing that these piece of shit engines ‘consume’ oil and are regularly repaired at the local dealer for going out, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the first sign of major engine failure on the horizon. I don’t know enough about this engine to be sure, but a fill cap that I screwed in tight four months ago that would/should tighten more over time shouldn’t blow off without there being a major pressure issue.

    Time to trade

They did have a problem with head gaskets but I thought that was resolved. They are real touchy about being overfilled. I've owned a bunch of Subies and never had an oil cap blow off. I'd be suspect of who ever did the last oil change not tightening the cap.

That’d be me four months ago. Seems like a long time for it to go without issues. Should have tightened more, if anything.

Her car has shown low oil before, so it may be over consuming. My dad said low oil pressure can blow a cap off, but he may be feeding me a line.

For the record I wasn't trying to be a smartass about being suspect, just throwing out an idea. Four months is a long time to have it all of a sudden go pop, that's real strange. Did you check a Subie forum and see if it's common?

Didn't take it that way.. I immediately suspected her dad checking her oil and adding some last night haha. I was wrong tho.

Only one guy has responded to a post on NASIOC.. basically suspected the same thing that it wasn't tight enough. Four months should have tightening that thing down to the point of needing a wrench to pop it off.

This is why I hate Subaru engines. They're the most high maintenance things around, even before 100k.

Cool, I just didn't want to come off like a dick. I know getting the cap off the Tacoma is a bitch at oil change time and seem to remember the same on my old Outback. My daughter-in-law has a Crosstrek so I'll be sure to bounce it off my son and see what he says.

No worries man. I’m pretty sure they all have the same gutless 2.5i 4cyl / CVT combo in then.

Gonna check her skids for the plug but I figure it’s gone since this happened on I-68 m right as we got close to Morgantown (that’s when we noticed the smell).

Also frustrating is I’ve been sick for like 3 weeks now (I’ve been on prednisone for 8 months now, immune system is shit) because my girl and her cousin get a two day flu and then I get hammered. I don’t even wanna mess with this.

For some reason I want to say that if there was that much pressure on the oil cap then you may have an issue with piston rings.

It's quite common for ringlands to fail on Subaru engines due to oil issues. I would get a compression/leakdown test done and see if your numbers are in spec.

Hoping it’s not ring land failure. I knew consumption was an issue across the board but didn’t know ring land failure was as bad on the NA motors. She may be shopping soon.

I don’t know enough about ring land because I got rid of mine before it knocked itself to death. Guessing the pressure from the cylinders is creeping back into the block and blew the cap off?

It’s not knocking, ticking, anything. Not sure what’s up.

It's only a hunch, I'm not familiar with any of the NA engines. I spent a lot of time under and around my EJ though. I'm pretty sure it was having ringlands issues when I dumped it off. Haha.
