    every oil change, if you change your oil at 3k change the filter, if you change at 6k change the filter, if you change the oil at 53k change the filter.

    Whatever you do, just make sure you tighten the stupid thing properly. I've learned my lesson from tightening it with a wrench, and just last week learned my lesson from not tightening it enough. It came loose after 3k miles. made a huge mess. Hand tight until I cant go anymore is how I'm gonna do it from now on. None of the 1/2 turn after the gasket touches crap, not tight enuff.

    Actually FSM specifies 3/4 turn after touching (or specific torque ) is full hand tight (I couldn't turn more than 3/4 turn with hand). Fresh experience from oil change yesterday.

    I have not noticed that. My OEM filters have a foil over the top (I guess protecting from something falling inside) but the rubber like looking seal was not "wet".

    My filter part number is

    Yup thats the one. I get them with the foil cover but with a white vaseline type grease on the o ring.

    I just double checked the plastic film I removed from the filter. You are right, there is a trace of some vaseline like substance. But I never considered that as a substitute for oiling the seal. I was thinking this is for the rubber to not dry out. I am probably wrong and overprotective but it's just me.

    Another of "just me" example:
    Because local Nissan dealer sold me the wrong oil filter I had to put back the old one when I changed the oil in my wife's Versa Note. But this was so i could fill it with the new oil and drive of the ramps. I'm doing the partial oil change in my wife's Nissan next weekend again (drain whatever comes out to the filter level), this time with the new oil filter. I know 100% of you will say it's a waste of money but for me it is gaining a piece of mind.

    I've done the same, not quite tightened it enough on an old Volvo 245 I had back in the day. A few weeks later I lost A LOT of oil...all over the driveway.

    Hand tight with some fresh oil on the gasket, feel free to crank it down with your hand, but don't use any tools to put it back on. This ensures you can get it back off with the help of a tool. I've had a hell of a time removing filters when people use a tool to put it on, it's just unnecessary.

    I put my filters on with my left hand as tight as I can get them. Then most every time I can get them off with my right hand, since I’m right handed.

    there is a hole for the normal drain valve, about 6 inches in diameter thru the skid already. the Fumoto just allows you to attach a hose to make the point of contact almost directly in the pan

    and I access the filter thru the driver's side tire well

    not sure where the I4 is located, under passenger side?
