I have the rear slider. Was just driving down a paved road and it shattered...both sides...the slider was open.

Has this happened to anyone else?

    How much is replacement approximately?

    Thanks

That happened to my old bronco but it had an electric window. It happened when I wasn't even driving too lol. It was because the window was somehow binded up in the tailgate and it just shattered, good thing the tint held it together.

Check a junkyard for a solid window since the slider is pretty much useless and makes the truck easier to break into.

I want the slider. I have it open all the time. Better airflow. Just need to replace both sides. And yea the TINT is holding it together.

Should I try for warranty??? It's an 09

I've heard of that happening on other cars but yours is the first I've heard of for the Tacoma.

I'll try the dealer warrenty first. It's obviously a flaw because both side pieces shattered from the side end and the slider window is fine.

    good.
Don't let them try to blame you. It is definitely a problem with the truck, make them fix it.

Check with the dealer but I don't have a warm and cozy feeling about that. Also check with your insurance ... you may have full glass with no deductible .... if not now you may want to add that for the future .... well worth the few $$$ per year.

Were you driving when it happened? I was driving a 1976 Plymouth Volare (hanging head in shame) with about 1100 miles on it and the back window exploded .... scared the shit right out of me.

    Best of luck.

Our family business is auto glass. I've been around it for many years now and although not unheard of spontaneous breaks are few and far between. Usually the cab is flexing the window was loose or installed wrong and/or some outside source caused the initial impact. there s really only 3 ways to break a tempered piece as your back glass is hit the very corner edge on something and as it 's in encapsulation( the rubber around) this wasn't possible, next would be flex this takes alot of pressure and the cab would not return to square if it flexed enough to do this. Lastly a direct impact like a rock or something moving with some velocity as tempered glass is impact resistant to blunt objects better than a sharp. My guess is more than likely you passed someone mowing and they rocked you, bastard child with red rider, or loose which you can still check if in truck go to inside encapsulation and push all around the edges if it gives out from body then there ya are and toyota will be fixing under warranty. bonding issues is the single hardest part about late model vehicles as the glass is now considered part of the structure. good luck and sliders are way cheaper than stationary cuz of the popularity.

happened to my wife's 4 runner. loaded it up for a weekend trip. shut the back hatch(which you don't slam, b/c it auto closes after a certain point) and when i closed the back side window shattered. we had to unload and reload in a different vehicle...

no reason to shatter, just did. \

Mike do you still have the middle sliding part of your glass slider? Only my middle section shattered so I"m looking to just buy that instead of replacing the entire glass slider...no biggie if not but let me know if you do still have it!

Maybe I am dumb, but doesn't "long cargo," go in the bed? For example, lumber. I wouldn't stick lumber back inside the cab.

I use the slider for carrying long pieces of trim. Trim typically comes in 12 or 16ft lengths. You can't hang long pieces of trim out of the back, it's too flexible and will drag the ground.

I recently purchased a 2017 4-door Tacoma and just months after the rear glass shattered when I closed the back door! The 2017 Tacoma has a new automatic sliding window and the part that broke is the stationary part on the drivers side of the truck. This is bizarre! I have found a bunch of articles on the Ford user site and this article referencing issues with rear windows shattering randomly like this https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...ding-windows&usg=AOvVaw28udvNSK22CnAM704-5XRx
but not much on the Tacoma other than this old thread. Any 2017 owners encountered this problem?

This happened on my 2012 driving down the road. It happened as a 18 wheeler was passing me. Possible a rock was thrown off a tire right through my window. Insurance took care of it and it didn't cost me anything. Just some duct tape to craft a makeshift window because it rains in Texas all the time
