What happened?

 

Starter gave up. The same starter I rebuilt last fall. Yeah, the starter is kinda important with the auto.

 

Oh that sucks a bunch, the starters kinda miserable get out on the V6, hope I don’t have to do it again.

 

Well yeah, it is a pain. Looks like I get to do it again.

Not sure yet. I might see if I can get one from Napa to have one on hand. I am very curious why my rebuild failed. I still have all the original parts from when we did the rebuild.

 

I went with an autozone starter.

If it’s makes you feel better I changed mine for no reason, thought to failed but it turned out to be a much simpler issue

 

Since I don't need mine as a DD, I think I am going to start with replacing the starter relays. There is one relay in the fuse box under the hood and I hear there is another one under the dash inside the cab, maybe Zane can clarify (@Speedytech7 ) where exactly that one is.

If replacing the relays does not fix the current (rebuilt) setup, I will pull it and see what is up with it.

 

I think the one under the hood is it. The one inside just controls the ignition circuit, without that you can't trigger the starter relay but if your gauges and idiot lights come on like usually before you start there's nothing to worry about there

No issues that I've seen with dash indicators. I took apart the relay under the hood previously. It looked clean/fine at the time but maybe it is not easy to go by a visual inspection.

 

Maybe have your neighbor come over and probe the output terminal (you can do it with the relay cover off) while you try and crank it. Easy enough to know for sure if it's working

 

If we do that, what exactly are we looking for? A voltage drop?

 

You should hear it click and pass 12v on the output pin. Just use the positive on the multimeter on the relay output pin and the negative on any ground.

 

Since we know the relay is working partially (the starter motor spins, but the plunger does not engage the gear teeth on the flywheel), does that change your recommendations?

 

Yeah, that's a dead Bendix (big springy starter plunger solenoid dealio) or your flywheel is doing it's best impression of a West Virginian and decided to lose some teeth to really sell the act.

 

@Digiratus I'll be in Seattle on the 11th if you want a hand changing the starter. Well 11th - 22nd if you prefer another day

Are you suggesting this is not a starter relay issue at all?

 

Yeah it sounds like just a typical bad starter to me.
