Favorite Brake Bleeding Method?

Hey all, I've got a 4x4 that I'm going to swap out the brake hoses on. I've bled the brakes before doing a method that many people are nervous about doing. Here's what I do:

1) Fill up the brake reservoir.
2) Loosen a bleeder nut and attach a hose.
3) Pump the brake enough to get the fluid flowing.
4) Top off the brake reservoir.
5) Repeat 3 and 4 until fluid is clean and free of bubbles.

Repeat 1-5 for each brake caliper.

I don't actually know how to bleed the rear brakes but I assume there's a bleeder back there too.

Some people are concerned this method will lead to air being sucked into the caliper. In my experience the hose will have fluid all along it such that air can't get sucked in. It does back up a tiny bit but not enough to bring air in.

Is this OK? If not, I've considered a power bleeder of some sort but prefer fewer large tools if I can avoid it. I don't have an air compressor or a place to hook one up (live in an apartment). Any tips would be appreciated!

I know a helper with a similar procedure is best, but I try to avoid dragging someone (e.g. gf) out there to help on this one.

I've tried having my wife/gf help me with clutch/brake bleeds. Let's just say our normally great communication skills do not extend to the garage, and it's better if I work alone, lol...

Yeah, I've heard that the chain thing sucks ass. I've seen a few people use a couple clamps.

 

We just bled a clutch today with this one and not a drop dripped out.

 

Speed bleeders here. I have them on all my cars.

 

As long as your hose off the bleeder valve is always in fluid it should work.

The thing is with just one person no way to tell if the hose might be sucking in air but looks good when you crawl under to tighten the valve .

Never tried the speed bleeders as brake bleeding is not a weekly project most of the time

Speed bleeders for the win! Start at the farthest (rear, opposite master) crack/push/close then move to the next. And of course, always check the resi to make sure its topped off. Whole thing take 30 min max with speed bleeders.

 

I have a Motive bottle that I use for pressure only (I don't put fluid in the bottle). The problem is the universal cap doesn't really work. Somebody on Amazon posted their solution by making a custom fitting out of PVC pipe and a rubber collar that fits around the neck of the master cylinder, and then connects to the Motive hose. You can see a picture on Amazon by reading the user comments if you look for the product: "Motive Products 1101 Master adapter". The reviewer left his comment on 4-29-17 with picture. FYI, I tried to construct the same item as in the picture but had a problem finding a rubber collar that would fit on the neck of the master cylinder. However the $50 solution posted here seems a little pricey but might be worth it if you want to use the Motive.

 

I’ve used my Motive bleeder countless times on my 1st gens, my current 2nd gen, abs my wife’s integra. All using the chain that comes with it. I’ve never had it leak once. It makes bleeding brakes so easy. Especially with the magnet catch container connected to the caliper/wheel cylinder.

 

I can see in a place that is dry and never sees winter speed bleeders might be the way to go

taking them off to clean every use would get old

Here bleeding brakes in my case means new bleeders almost every time
