It only happens while I'm driving and it gets kind of loud around 60 miles an hour. I changed gear oil in both differentials and the transfer case. When changing the front differential I noticed the CV axle has a fair amount of slop where it goes into the differential. Would the bad needle bearing cause a droning sound?

    I would suspect wheel bearing.

@Jonas. That was the first thing I checked. I have no slop in either

I didn't have slop in mine either. What I did have was
    Droning sound
    Faint vibrations in steering
Dragging wheel when I spun them
After driving I would feel the hubs with my fingers. One was really hot, the other warm.
That's all I got. Good luck!

Wheel bearing has to be pretty badly tashed to have play in it.

It could be an inner bearing mine had that problem. Easy coast gear supply sells a replacement bushing.

I've read about the ecgs bushing.
Did replacing that get rid of the drone and the slop where the cv seats at the diff?

Oh joy. Almost at 300 k miles and I've yet to dig this deep into the truck... I haven't had to.
Might as well replace that axle as well. It's original and with the slop that's there now, that shaft can't be looking to pretty.

    Edit:
Ouch! Around $500. for the bushing with seal and removal tool along with a new axle and wheel bearing. I replaced the passenger side wheel bearing last year. I'll not be happy if i still got this drone.
Shit like this is pushing back my stereo project. :annoyed:

Just realized you have almost 300k on your truck. It could be the inner bearing or it could be everything else :D

Even more likely the bearing. Those fronts should be done In pairs. Also how I knew mine was bad. The previous owner had done one side not long before I bought it. Knew the other wouldn't be far behind.

I've done bearings already. Twice on the driver side once on the passenger side which was the last one done. Just about a year ago.

In case anybody is wondering. I have replace both wheel bearings, both CV axles, and did ECGS bushing. I still have the droning sound. Do u joints or the carrier bearing then home to make any noise that resonates through the cab?

No, they're not. I've been dealing with this noise for a while. And, these are new from last August/September as they were due before winter.
It drones through the whole cabin making it impossible for me to localize it. I've replaced both from wheel bearings, CV axles , and did the ECGS bushing. Took the drive shaft out too. No change.
Even though taking the drive shaft out made no difference, I'm still replacing the u joints and carrier bearing.
    Over 300 k miles now.
