Dual dashcam with leer cap

I wanted to install a dashcam for sometime now. Finally got it done.

I don't have it wired directly so it won't work when parked. A project for later...

Anyway, the main camera was pretty straight forward, especially I already had a usb port installed on the left side.




I have a Leer cap on, so I wanted the rear camera mounted on the rear glass. That meant I had to run the wire outside. With double cab taco, I asked the seller to send me a longer wire too. The one that comes with the camera is a bit too short.

Below are a few pics on how I chose to run the rear camera wire. Not the cleanest installation but it works. I also can take the cap off and put the wire in the box if I have to.

Might want to do some clean up on your frame before it gets worse . Other than that

Yikes! I would be taking a wire wheel to that and coating the out that with a rust encapsulated paint. Makes me appreciate Cali now. Damn salt roads ruin everything.

 

That coating was done by Toyota last year after the frame was inspected and wasn't approved for replacement. I figured, other than the looks it won't be any worse than it already was. I was told, the frame had normal amount of rust for the vehicle age

 

Ah. Well keep an eye on it. Nice job on the install. Looking to do a dash cam soon on my truck.

 

I did something similar last year. The only difference is I ran 12v out to the cap and used a dedicated camera. At the time all the rear facing cameras were in the 480p range and looked horrible. Now when I upgrade the front the back usually gets the better of the 2. Right now I am using Yi Cams with built in Wifi. It allows me to see what is going on in back with an Ipad.

 

nice install! I wanted to do this as well, and I have a shell just like yours, I was wondering how the rear camera quality is at night through the tinted window? Is it hard to make out what's going on, or does the tint even matter?

 

I yet to test this at night. I'll post another video in a few days.

What did you tap into under the hood? I have a dedicated dash cam I wand to use in the cap too.
