Front radar (TSS) sensor error

I doubt the OEM garnish will fit that BPF metal grille. The mounting tabs & posts are probably different. Do you have a pic of the backside to see how it mounts?

 

Damn good pics man but yea the OEM or a faux garnish won't work unfortunately. Here's what the backside looks like which is different from yours

 

My example may be unique, but replacing the two plastic rivet fasteners that attach the cowl to the radiator frame did the trick.
Bought the faux pro grille from Caliraised, OEM garnish, longer cable, couple of screws to mount sensor to garnish. No error displayed, drove St Louis to Moab and back with no problems. I did hit an owl coming back across Kansas at night. Very solid hit, but no body damage. A month later, the error light came on when I tried to engage cruise control, which didn’t work either. Then the error light would go off and on driving in town.
Went into dealer for 5k checkup, they refused to check either sensor or cruise control because I installed an aftermarket grille. After some back and forth the service manager called, said technician wouldn’t check it because the cowl was very loose, which it was due to bird strike.
Bought two plastic fasteners from dealership for $5, which tightened up cowl, not as tight as stock was, but good enough, no problems since.

 

All u need to do is recalibrate the sensor angle. When I first put mine in it started putting off error codes. I solved it for 59 cents I put two washers on the bottom two bolts between the sensor and the nuts they bolt in to. Then reinserted the top screw. This changes the pitch of the sensor by one degree. Problem solved then I put my lift on and had to add another washer. Once again problem solved. Hope this helps.

Mine is definitely an OEM garnish. After about 500 miles of driving I’m still getting the error, tho it doesn’t seem to come on quite as quickly as it used to. I’m hoping that’s a good sign.

 

I added a washer and it worked perfectly on my way home. That's one huge headache gone.

 

How hard was it to do this with the grill already installed?

 

I just popped the grill out. It's fast and seemed easier.

 

Remember the size of the washers off hand?

 

I got the error with the ghetto solution. Only when I put in he OEM garnish did it work.

 

I think I used 3/8 washers

 

I'm complete stock, no aftermarket at all, late 2018 buy on a TRD off-road, 2300 miles and the pre-collission warning comes on constantly every time I drive, sometimes 2-5 minutes, other times 20-30 min. Dealer tech drove twice for over 25 mins with no issues then did a drive with me in the vehicle to "explain" everything, as we pull back into the dealer lot the warning came on right in front of him, as he's driving. Set up 2nd appt to drop off and now they say its operating normally and I'm getting it dirty or its a "reflection" issue.

 

After about 150 miles of driving and still getting the light, I tried something similar. I used a longer screw with a built in washer on the top portion of the sensor. It pushed the sensor to be flush and have no obstruction. So far I'm good to go (50 miles driven).

Thanks for adding another data point. I'm happy I didn't have to buy an OEM garnish, especially because in my case it wouldn't fit properly with my aftermarket aluminum grill.

I'm at the dealer for a 10k service and the service rep said that my 2018 was eligible for a new TSS sensor campaign. He stated that it was due to an ongoing issue with the sensor failing when wet. They will look at the parts and the sensor, then determine if something needs to be changed. I told him that I had a TRD Pro grille on the truck, but he said it shouldn't matter since it's the sensor they are looking at. Plus he said if Toyota wants to give me a new sensor under warranty, let them. I guess I'll find out what they say in a couple of hours.

I haven't had any issues since adjusting the sensor as previously posted.

 

So are you saying there is a type of recall for this I have a 2018 Cheese grater grill and have been thinking about switching that out
