Because no safety. With the hammer down, it's probably pressing the firing pin against the primer of the round in the chamber (depending on your firing pin; at the very least it's considerably closer to the primer than it should be, with the weight of the hammer behind it). A bump or jostle might be all it'd take to fire off that round, depending on how hard the primer is. If you're going to keep a round in the chamber on a 1911, C&L is the only way to carry.

Yeah I was reading on this, and if I ever decide to carry it, I'll just get a Kydex holster that covers the trigger completely and carry loaded with the safety on. I'll just carry it with nothing in the chamber in a leather holster when I'm out hunting.

It's basically gonna be a range toy/occasional predator protection pistol for me. I like the idea of .45 FMJ or cast lead better than 9mm hollow points for thick skin and bones, though I can alternate HP/FMJ in the 9mm and be fairly confident other than for bears. Hopefully I'll have a rifle with me for those. For humans, God forbid I ever have to use it, I'll stick to my 9mm's.

Bought a SIG Tango4 1-4 and a surefire weapon light for my AR. Maybe someday I'll have the money to throw down for an Aimpoint and an magnifier, but this seems like the best option around at a decent price for now.

I doubt the hammer is likely to set off a primer from low cock, but you should never have to fiddle with a gun when carrying it before firing. Israeli carry, hammer down on an SA, same story. You fiddle instead of shoot, you're probably screwed. At least a 1911 safety is convenient to hold down while shooting.

I have 2 RIAs, a 9mm and a .45. Nice guns at a budget price. Make sure you tear it completely down and clean the shipping gunk off it all. Relube, reassemble, bitch about the sear assembly hassle ;).
If you are uneasy about carry in Condition 1, loaded locked and cocked, thumb safety on, just carry it for a while with an empty chamber still cocked, safety on. I was, and I did. Bouncing on a quad, in and out of the truck, driving steel posts, hammer never fell.
    Enjoy your new pistol.

eh I dunno, but it prob wouldnt be unwise also to carry a 1911 for self defense in the un-cocked position...but thats just me.

How do you like the tango 4? If the quality is anything like their red dots, I’m sure it will serve you well. I have a few different red dots from them and they are really nice for the money. The dots are perfectly round when I look through my magnifier. Some have up to 4 different reticle choices. You can choose an aim point like single 2moa dot, an eotech like dot w/ 65 Moa ring and even bdc dots corresponding to 5, 10, and 15 moa drops. I also have an aimpoint micro h1 on a larue qd mount and I prefer the sigs over the aimpoint. Their Romeo and Juliet red dot/ magnifier combo can be had for sub $500CF4985A2-D956-4E27-9F47-87E37D9A8238.jpg

I picked this up Saturday. Shot it today. I can clear a plate rack in no time with this little gem.

Is that what happened, or is that what he said happened? I'd love to read more if there's more info on that.

Thanks man; a labor of love for sure. Under appreciated in the modern day of Glocks and Sigs, and HK's but ya can't go wrong with the 1911.
