Depends how big the hole turns out. I'm pretty sure the test is they whack it with a ball peen hammer and the hole has to be a certain size.

I'd take it to Mark Miller downtown, they have a great service department and I've heard of a couple guys that had good experiences with frame replacements there.

Yeah? I took mine there last year to get it inspected for a perforation, left it for a day and they didn't look at it. They said they weren't a cold state so they weren't equipped to deal with the recall. I made them do the inspection but they definitely didn't do the hammer check and they didn't scrape any rust so I'm not feeling super confident with them. I will probably call both L and M Miller and see if I can get any more info.

I took mine to larry miller for the frame replacement. I originally went to mark miller, but the awful service advisor I got stuck with that time (my usual one is pretty good) told me that it was a 'guaranteed' around $2K for stuff they'd break during the dismantling process. Even talked to the service manager, and he said the same thing. I said fuck that and tried LHM. They were more reasonable leading into it, saying they could get approval from Toyota to replace just about anything related to the replacement. The only money out of pocket I spent was new 5100's all around that they put in for free, and I bought a new battery. Everything else, including front brakes that I was planning on having them do but they got approved by Toyota, was covered.

They didn't do a perfect job. I had to go back I think 4 times for them to button up small things that weren't done correctly. Even after all of that, I had a few plastic clips and I think one bolt left in my cupholder that I or they never found homes for.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go to mark miller, make sure I got my regular advisor, and insist that they contact Toyota before charging me for anything.

Ok I just asked Geoff Beers, who did at least 20 of those frame replacements himself before going out on his own. He says:

    So there you have it.

Seriously, Geoff's a great asset to our community. My last time at Karl Malone I got a goon of a service advisor, but I'd go back in a heartbeat if Geoff said to.

    Also, reminds me of this:

June 8-26. Little nervous, little excited, little frustrated.

Nervous because of ALL the open country for stuff to go sideways in

    Excited because Duh.

Frustrated because taking 1/12 of the year and basically being off the grid is tough. I'm starting the househunting process and that trip is in the prime zone for when closing papers and stuff need to be signed per my preferred timeline. Plus dropping the kind of roadtrip cash we are takes away from the closing cost fund.

All true, but you’ll never be able to replace the memories. It will be worth it.

I don't think he does frame swaps. He used to work at a dealership and was a pretty rad tech, and then decided he could do better on his own. Not sure he is equipped for a frame swap, but for general/intermediate toyota repair, he's a go-to. I think somewhere in the 215 belt, but I can't remember.

Anyone live in St George or surrounding areas and have a temporary room for rent? Having horrible luck with classifieds and affordable BnB. PM if interested.

I’m thinking of heading up and checking out American Fork Canyon in may, and possibly camping the night. I’ve never been there. By then I’ll be regeared with lockers and ready to go. Is there any interest for a meet up and some wheeling?
