I don't think the dude doing 80mph on 4x4 with lockers on knows what the hell they're doing.

Fyi for the people who are asking for the engine braking.
Putting bigger/heavier tires on create more rotational mass to have to slow down when going down large declines. The stock gearing is essentially useless when in D and coasting putting all of the sopping load on to the brakes. Regearing the diffs to a lower gear passively helps slow the vehicle when coasting downhill.
Not sure if many people think of that. ;)

Thanks. I'm on 87 Performance is and it's much better than stock but wish it would hold gears just a little longer when accelerating. I'm sure 1.06 will bring improvements to shifting soon enough but thinking of trying SSP until then. Only drawback I know of is it doesn't play nice with other OBD devices.

The people asking for increased engine braking are 6MT owners. Engine braking is generally a core aspect of utilizing a manual transmission, without needing to rely on never getting heavier tires, or needing to regear our already superior gearing (when compared to the 6AT)

When we downshift, we tend to get the engine braking that we're looking for, for a little bit, and then the truck compensates and reduces that effect, and the slowing....slows, rather than increases.

Understood. But my point still stands that having lower gears in diffs helps with downhill deceleration. Taking a small amount of the load off of the engine for braking and the brakes for braking. No matter what transmission you own.

running stock gears and tires, theres still no engine braking. I'm sure bigger tires only makes it worse.

    >6% grade is no fun, especially if towing. you are basically just free wheeling down the grade.

I hear you, it's a valid point, but imagine spending anywhere from 2-4k to gain a bit better engine braking capability lol I'll pass and ask for Mat to look into it instead.

Here you go. This is from a while back. Part of the issue is Toyotas "logic" and mat said a while back its something he's looking into

No need to imagine. I live it! Haha. I had 5.29’s installed about 2 months ago now and my braking feels much more controlled now. Before with stock gearing and larger heavy tires, the truck seemed to run away from me even just driving around town. I would constantly over shoot turns and feel like I am about to rear end someone at a stop light.
I 100% agree with you though. I am all for any future updates Mat can bring to the truck in regards to engine braking. For MT or AT.

Thank you! Has it been discussed in this thread? I searched but was not able to find talk of it.

I think most of the big boys run spools in there 36 or 40 spline rear axles in the trophy/trick trucks.

You can ask the Hurbst brothers, Justin Matney, or Menzies how un safe 4wd is at speed.

I have only felt more safe with 4wd engaged at any speed. Do lots of front wheel drive vehicles go flying off the road when they hit bumps, well some do.

105 did great on the trail, 125 miles in 4wd high range and about 200 yards in low range going through the afton river crossing. Can’t wait for 106 with the different upshift/downshift maps. I think that will clear up all the clunks on downshifts and random wierdness between 1st2nd.

So I got my registration key and getting ready to go to my truck. What would you guys suggest for me to use. I’m running on Kings with 295 tires. I do a lot of highway miles here in SoCal.

So base or performance? Thank you

I tried the base first (with heavy tires and lift), and it was an improvement. Better, smoother shifting. But the truck still felt sluggish and heavy. So I decided to try the performance tune and it was much better. My truck felt lighter, pickup was better, shifting stays smooth.
