The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

Hello, I’m interested in regearing my 2017 Tacoma with a auto transmission. I’ve done some mods to the taco. I’ve installed a Lo-Pro Winch bumper with weights about 150 pounds or so. I’ve installed rock sliders with are about 75 pounds or so. I have a leer top that weighs 100 pounds. I installed a 3 inch kind suspension with 285/70/17 BFGoodrich K02 load range C. I pull my 17’ Casita travel trailer at times. It’s my daily driver I drive have city and have freeway 35 miles daily. What gears would be the best way to go 4.88 or 5.29? Thank you for your input!

 

Disclaimer: I haven't regeared yet, but I have asked all the same questions and have done tons of research. Everything points to 5.29 for your situation.

I am certainly going 5.29. worst case it is over geared I get even bigger tires.

Also, I have read a few posts of users who have 4.88 and wish they got 5.29s, but I've never read the opposite.

 

Thank you for the information. When I’m ready to pull the trigger I’m going to go 5.29 seems a little to low for my setup what people are telling me but This tread reinsurers about going with 5.29 gears. Ty!

 

So I have no good data. The drive from Colorado Springs to Fruita was on a single tank and averaged about 16mpgs. Thereafter I have no data since every fill up was in-between offroad trails and on the drive back we were hammered with a blizzard in Vail and spent a few hours chugging along at 20mphs up snow covered roads with Semi's jack-knifing all over the place. I'll keep on it

 

After watching these, I have no problem paying to have it done.

 

Anyone have issues with the e-locker and abs lights staying on after upgrading the gears? Code scanner won't reset them.

 

No? Sounds like your install didn’t go well.

 

That's what I'm afraid of, shop called told me it was done but they were taking it to Toyota in the morning to see if it was a Techstream issue.

 

I’m not sure what Techstream has to do with it. Once you put the diffs back and plug everything in, It should work. The truck doesn’t know you did anything.

 

I don't know thought maybe removing the locker tripped something in the computer since it's all electronically controlled.

Your wheels are also heavy as hell, I wonder if I’d get better MPGs with an 18lb wheel and 35s?

 

True and the tires I have weigh about 75 lbs or so. I also was running the I-70 corridor through the Rockies aka the Ike Gauntlet so that’s not the best baseline either.

 

Jeeeeez, I’m looking at about 84lbs including wheel+tire for 35s. I guess all things considered 16mpg isn’t too bad. I remember seeing a post from @BigMike getting pretty impressing MPG on 40s

 

Interesting. I'm running 17x9 Rays which I believe are 25lbs and 285/75 nittos at 66lbs, so 91lb total if my math is right. Still waiting a bit to regear, but for the time being my truck is eating this California gas for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an occasional midnight snack. All expected.

 

Yeah it’s pushing a rediculus $4 a gallon right now. I feel the pain

 

Wow I wonder why my wheels / tires are running maybe that’s the reason I’m getting a pretty sad mpg even with 5.29 and super easy on the gas pedal. Toyo MTs probably is part of the reason 255/85/16 not really the huge tire by any means.

 

Toyos are heavy but since I been down in Miramar driving around I’m averaging 11-12 mpg cause of all the stop and go.

 

Figured it out, wire inside the third member came loose, had to pull third member, reconnect the wire and wallla it works and no warning lights. Thanks for the responses guys!
