    Hye community, heading out to Anza Borrego to shoot some wildflowers and wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations for primitive or undeveloped campsites in or around the Anza Borrego area. Not trying to do any technical off-roading, but don't mind light off-roading. I'm not avid off-roader kind of guy so my confidence level is not too high. Also, some shade would be a plus in case it gets too hot. Thanks everyone!

    If you are headed that way over the weekend then be careful of flash flooding as rain's in the forecast. Many trails are washes so be alert. You can camp pretty much anywhere in BLM land. Enjoy!

    On BLM land you usually camp anywhere. On State Park land you have to stay within 100 feet of the primitive road you are on.

    Last time I was off roading in the Anza Borrego Desert was in the early 90's . This was when you could go thru Coyote Canyon up thru the lower , middle and upper Willow sections

    Also both the Borrego springs entrance to the canyon and Turkey track sections near Anza were true technical Rock crawling sections . I also remember going on the Hemet Jeep Calvacade from Hemet down Coyote canyon thru the badlands then finish near the Salton sea

    Might be a bit late for you, but I'm in the process of posting my Anza-Borrego trip, and it's got a ton of photos and names of places we checked out on our first couple trips down there.

    Nice photos! I remember going during the super bloom of 2017 and we were amazed at how packed Borrego Springs was compared to the other times we visited. Taco power helped us escape the crowds and find a good spot to view the scenery.

    Try to get in the park by 8 or 9am if you want to see the main flower areas without the insane crowds

    x2 on recommendation to get there early. I remember driving through this area to get to Sheep Canyon and there were people (and horses) all around Coyote Canyon. I was with a stock DCSB OR 4wd that made it to Sheep Canyon no problem. Seems like this super bloom could last until May from what I heard on the news.

    Proper fire ring in Borrego is a must. I camped at the first free site down the s22
    nice clean rest rooms.

    Today was Fish Creek Wash and Split Mountain Road...First up were the Elephant Knees. This amazing formation was created over millions of years - its sedimentary layers deposited as part of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) and prehistoric Lake Cahuilla (the precursor to the Salton Sea). And, like any sea-based sedimentary formation, the Elephant Knees are littered with fossils. From corals, clams, crabs, and shrimp to sharks, rays, and baleen whale - numerous fossils can be found in vast quantities in this area. In fact, vast quantities of oyster shells are what make up the slightly harder layers of sediment - slower to erode as the soft mud above and below wash away, these layers have become the "knees" of the formation...
