No diesel! U.S. will kill it with the junk exhaust system. Too much pain. Toyota knows this and says screw it.

Why wouldnt there be a turbo on it? Most 4cyl diesels come with turbo. Best and most efficient way to do it.

This ! With all the the emissions tech on everything these days, it’s a constant battle to keep newer trucks on the road. I work on heavy trucks but I’m sure it’s no different in the small stuff. We don’t have anything newer than 2007 in our fleet anymore, basically just due to down time with newer trucks. Unless your deleting these newer trucks once the warranty is up, your bound to have issues with the stuff there gonna fire at it to meet our standards.

I would still probably buy one though..

Why diesel? More torque and better gas mileage.

Modern diesels are not a PITA to drive and don't produce black smoke when operated properly. I put 20K miles on an RV with a Mercedes 3L turbodiesel--had to add DET every 3000 miles or so but no biggie. This engine would carry a 10K lb RV plus tow 5000 lb or so while getting 15-18 MPG. (If you know RV's you'll know that's phenomenal gas mileage.) It was no speed demon, though...

I'd be in favor of a diesel option--2.5L turbo--mainly for those who need to pull or haul stuff. It's not so much EPA rules as the fact that in the US petrol is taxed less than diesel (the opposite is true in Europe), therefore making diesel unprofitable for most manufacturers. Especially since petrol prices are relatively low.

    https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-european-diesel-cars/

Whether I would get one is another question--would have to see the specs. I don't need the extra torque but do appreciate speed, so probably not.

Swap one of these in if you want a diesel Tacoma, it's probably the only way you'll ever get a diesel taco..

Would be a cool swap if you did it right.

I work on industrial/commercial EPA7/10 Diesel engines errday. The amount of money spent on troubleshooting and parts that fail based on fundamental design and material flaws (or inappropriate use of materials in high temp applications) would be shocking, but I’m used to it. Turbos as well. It’s obviously worth it when you need industrial/commercial torque. But for a passenger vehicle? GTFO. I think people who want this just watch too much discovery channel and wannabe “diesel guys”.

I meant the gassers need a turbo to specify. The 2.8 diesels are turbo'd already.

10 years ago I still would of agreed a small turbo diesel in a small/midsize truck would be ideal. Not today. Gasoline engines are becoming very efficient and the overall lifespan and cost of operation/repair is now CHEAPER than any comparable diesel. Unless you are pulling 10,000lbs or more daily, the math does not work out in a diesels favor anymore. Now if you want one just 'cause, fine buy one. But don't believe in the hype that it's 'better' now a days.

Personal preference I guess. Just not a big fan of Diesel engines. I did own a F250 PS years ago. That truck was a money pit.

I happen to disagree. I had a 2008 TRD and then a 2016 Tacoma TRD long bed CC. I now have a 2.8 L Turbo diesel Hilux 4x4. I like the Hilux far more. Now I am not sure what model Hilux you drove but I love the low end Tq the turbo diesel offers off road. I really do not care about MPG but the truck itself is just better. I just recently added a ECU Shop tuner and its not a fair comparison to a Tacoma. Plus their is really no maintenance on the Diesel engine.

I want to be clear, I really liked all the trucks but the Turbo diesel is a nice ride plus having a turbo there is a lot of power just waiting to be accessed with some boost and fuel tune up.
