Wiring Help for Power Mirror Mod

Hello. I am setting up some power mirrors on a '99 Tacoma that had manual mirrors on it. Got the power mirrors off a 2004 Tacoma and got the mirror switch from a '99 (?) Camry.

Please, will one of you wiring aces take a look at this photo of the switch and give me advice on which wire goes where when I hook up to the mirrors? When the wiring connector is plugged into the back of the mirror switch, the green wire is on top behind the "L". Mirrors have three wires each: brown, black, and red.

Also, I thought I would tap into power to the cigarette lighter to run this. Would I need to put anything besides a fuse on that line?

Hi Taco47001. I appreciate the diagram, especially locating it for me on page 109, but I'm a very simple man when it comes to electrical diagrams. I will need further help.

from the diagram, pg 109 pdf, it looks like the white/black wire is ground, but I can't be sure. I either can't make out what the colors are supposed to be on the diagram or the abbreviations do not correlate to the same color wires in my photo.

If I had to guess at the diagram and wire harness connector I would say the lone green wire at top of connector is power, with the other six wires mating up as shown in diagram with the far left white/black wire ground and others in order shown to both mirrors.

Am I reading that right?

 

I believe you are correct as for the power and ground wires. It does appear that the wire colors on your switch, are different from what is on the diagram. Utilizing the switching diagram you could easily determine which functions were associated with which wires by using an ohm meter as well. You should be able to youtube how to use an ohm meter...fairly simple.

 

I believe as long as you have the power and ground correct, the only thing effected by the other wires is the direction the mirror moves. You could test the mirror as you connect wires to make sure it's working correctly.

 

Finally got some time for this. Still stumped. Here's what I learned:

Thinking back on it, I think the mirror switch may have actually came off a '97 or '99 RAV4. I looked inside lots of Toyotas that day in the wrecking yard. I looked up some different wiring diagrams on line and found one that mates up with my mirror switch back (attached), but when I hook up wires, I get nothing.

When I test I am hooking up at bench on a 12v battery with positive and negative wires. I can't read electrical diagrams that well but it doesn't look like there are any relays I need to be putting in on the power line. The number 6 wire looks to be a simple splice, and ground should just go to ground. Or am I missing something?

When checking different combinations with the ohm meter, the only wire combination I get any 0.00 readings off involves the #6 wire. Seems I should get more than that if the switch is working through all positions? I popped the back on the switch - looks fine. These things should be pretty straight forward. Any thoughts on next steps? Thanks for any help!

 

Digging up an old thread here but did you ever get this to work? I am going to be adding power mirrors to my truck soon. Ive got the mirrors ordered and I just yesterday got a switch with pigtails (identical to yours) from the junk yard.

 

This is the wrong mirror switch for our trucks. These were only 1995-2000, and 2001 onwards was different. Are you asking for your 2008 or do you have a first gen?

 

I actually bought a switch identical to this from a 99 Camry yesterday so I can add power mirrors to my truck. I have an 08 base model with nothing. the switch fits in the slot perfectly. Just need to figure out the wiring. I made sure to get a switch that would fit and has 7 wires. I just need to figure out which wire to connect where lol

 

The switch will fit however this is the wrong style of switch. 2001 onwards will have a different connector and different wires.

That switch will probably work though. However you need the wiring schematic for a 1999 Camry, you don’t want to guess with this sort of thing.

 

I actually printed one out this morning (the one in the link in this thread) but it is incredibly difficult to figure out. Ill have to set up a testing desk in my work shop and sit down with it. I know Pink is power and white/black is ground so i just need to figure out the directions I think.

 

I don’t know much about second gen mirrors, you replied to a first gen thread. However it should be pretty similar.

You need the schematic for your truck mirrors too.

 

It’s a very sikilar job and not too hard. I’ve got mirrors from a 2010 4Runner and a switch from a 99 Camry. Need to match up wires with 2 different diagrams. Won’t be too bad

 

I’m very familiar with power door wiring. I added power doors to my truck and created my own retrofit system that adapts to the OEM door harnesses. I used to have crank windows, manual mirrors and windows.

 

I might be interested in learning about the power windows and locks. Could you go in depth a bit?

 

It’s relatively complicated. What my system does is it plugs into the OEM door harnesses and from there it goes into my system. It uses three relays, one for the windows, one for lock, and one for unlock. There’s a 12vDC common rail and a ground rail where certain wires of the factory harness have to ground on including the relays.

 

Hi all. This did work. The 1999 Tacoma we did the mod on is sold so I have no way of accessing it to determining which wire is which and my memory will not go back that far. IIRC the guys on the thread were essentially correct. The wiring was relatively straight forward, it just took me some juggling to figure out which wire went where. It helps if you have a battery or 12 volt source you can hook the mirror/wires up to and try out the different configuration. Get ground and power right and the other wires are just bench trial and error for the mirror direction.

 

Got the wiring figured out today. 99 camry switch and 2010 4Runner mirrors. All working properly
