The consensus here is between 30-50,000 miles for the 4cyl, depending on your usage and temperatures. i.e. if you drive it like a car most of the time, not hauling or towing, that is light service and you can pretty safely go 50k between drain & fill services. But if you run it hard, lots of towing/hauling and/or in high ambient temperatures, you'd be wise to drain & fill it at 30k intervals. Mine sees light usage and was doing the drain & fill every 30k but the fluid still looks and smells fresh and perfect, so I'm going to 50k intervals as long as the light service continues. Also if you keep your truck a long time, at some point you will want to drop the pan and change the filter & gasket at least once, suggest doing this somewhere between 100-150k miles.

Not true. Some 1974-1976 MGB's with a manual transmission came with a dipstick.
Also, the recommended transmission fluid was 20/50 motor oil.

100% true. No manual I've ever seen has a dipstick tube.

Just to chime in, all manuals don't use gear oil, My 1982 Dodge D/50 5 speed manual used ATF. I first thought previous owner had installed the wrong thing, read the owners manual & ATF is what it called for.

you'll need exactly 4 quarts of T-IV for the pan drain and refill

have you mixed any other aftermarket T-IV fluid like Valvoline.Mobil1 and did a pan drain/refill? im wondering if there would be any harm mixing what OEM fluid in the trans. with another brand of trans. fluid, ive always have used OEM trans fluid but I can get aftermarket eqiuvilents easier and cheaper.

Yes I have run Valvoline and Castrol import multi-vehicle ATF fluids, they are "recommended for use in vehicles that require... Toyota T-IV" (among other specifications). They work OK, the shift quality is not the same as OEM fluid, a little more slip in some shifts and does not feel as firm. So I believe these aftermarket fluids are definitely not the same thing as the original Toyota T-IV fluid, but I guess they are adequate. My research says that the Mobil 3309 and Idemitsu TLS fluids are the exact same thing as Toyota T-IV although I have not tried either one of these and do not plan to.
So after trying the national brands import multi-vehicle fluids, my experience is that the OEM fluid is better for the transmission and worth a few extra dollars. So I won't be running any more of the other brands, sticking to genuine Toyota T-IV for future services. Here are the transmission services I've done to my Tacoma:
60k miles: drain & fill with OEM T-IV (4 quarts)
90k: drain & fill with Castrol import multi-vehicle (4 quarts), noticed the change in shift quality shortly after this service
120k: pull pan & filter, new filter & pan gasket, refill with Valvoline import multi-vehicle (4 quarts), shift quality did not improve
150k: drain & fill with OEM T-IV (4 quarts), shift quality slightly improved

thanks this is exactly what im looking for, the owners manual states T-IV or JWS 3309 (Mobil) so I assume the OEM branded fluid would be Mobil 3309. ive always used the OEM T-IV in my last 2 trucks but have noticed an influx of aftermarket equivilents available at a little less cost than Toyota OEM which a lot of people are using in their WS required 5 speed transmissions like Valvoline MaxLife, I think i'll keep using the OEM stuff based on your findings with the others, although they work maybe not as well as the OEM fluid, thanks I appreciate your info a lot kind of confirms the old adage to pay a little more for Toyota quality.
