This is the state of our educational system

kids need to focus on their education at that age not sex/dating
they have their whole adult life for that stuff
teenage years are precious & should be focused on self improvement/learning
(teen years 13-19 roughly 6-7 years of ones life, adult life 20-80 roughly 60 years)
I find it sad that teens feel such a need to act like an adult when they have majority of their life to do so
dating & sex cloud a young mind
condoning it & promoting is a major failure in our culture (prom)
sex is the common denominator in everything marketed to the youth of America

its really simple...focus on schooling first then relationships second
young folks today are brainwashed to do this the other way, relationship first then education,
& this all starts at home with parents/caregivers either having the tough dialogues or avoiding them

when I was a kid my parents didnt allow me to watch 'three's company'
today its on nick at nite
our whole culture in regards to sex has changed in 20-30 years
& all of this is tied into middle/high school

best decision I ever made with my kids schooling was starting home school at middle school age
my younger one is turning 16 soon, will get her GED this spring & start community college in the fall
when she goes off to university at 18 she will have 2 of the 4 years for college complete
if she was in high school none of this would occur.....rather she would be distracted by boys, partying, & socializing
she & all youngsters need to focus on the books
the higher you move up in the education system, the better mate/life partner you can attain, not the other way around

I would suggest all young bucks wait until they finish their education before entering the dating world/sex/relationshipville

I remember being a scout, and you could ALWAYS tell who the homeschoolers were. Usually the shy ones that a lot of their peers considered a little "out there". Not a dig, just an observation from the other side. But given a lot of schools, I am not sure homeschooling is a bad choice.

Depends where you go to school, but you are right, it is trending that way.

I get where you are coming from, and you are right that it causes blinders (did for me anyways), but basic biology says otherwise.

The teachers Unions are a HUUUUUUUGE part of this problem.

Not saying this theoretically... I know this to be true (ESPECIALLY IN CA) from first hand information from my mother who was a teacher for 31 years in CA and also served on the board of the City teachers union, the California Teachers Association, and was also a delegate to multiple National Education Association conventions.

The educators in this Country, the Education System in the Country, and the Unions that represent them are broken... Period... Terribly.

Don't get me wrong, there are still some good teachers. But they are by FAAAAAR the exception not the rule.

Used to be teachers honestly wanted to teach. Now they are looking for an 8 to 3:30-4 Monday through Friday with 3 months paid vacation, and to do the bare minimum of what they can scrape by with.

 

You are correct that it is all broken. That being said... this last strike here was 30000 teachers.....the strike before that in the late 80's was also 30000 teachers..
So by that number alone the union and schools have not grown.
Personal knowledge from both of them is the students lose everytime.

 

My Mom crossed the picket line in the 80s because her reason for teaching was the kids. They wrote an article in the local paper about her... I remember it clearly... It was a big deal.

She quit teaching when she realized it was a complete waste of effort. She was one of the teachers that trained new teachers, and the utter incompetence and laziness she delt with (with the new teachers) was unbarable.

As noted by others, Administration was a complete joke as well.

 

I just want to point out that the problem is not relegated to unionized states. My wife teaches in a state that prohibits collective bargaining for all govt employees, but the same problems exist as for others.

 

You think its bad now, wait untill these same kids get jobs etc. Oh and for top dollar and not much work, and I have to be able to play on my phone all day. Its sad

I agree with you. The stuff on regular TV is over sexualized. The profanity allowed is horrible. I am not that old, but I hear so many adults (male and female) using so much profanity it’s not even funny. I mean I know it’s not my business, but what ever happened to being courteous when kids are around???!!
I am no one to judge, I used very foul language a lot before, I don’t anymore after my kids were born, but If i do, I don’t use it in front of my kids or anybody’s else’s kids.

Kids these days want to be popular so bad. They all want to be influencers or YouTube stars. There will be a day when no one will want to be doctors or scientists.

 

Luckily for me, I haven’t had to experience this while in high school because I take only AP classes because I care about my education. All the teachers I’ve had push their students to do their best and really care about them.

But, when it comes to regular classes, what you described above is exactly what goes on. The only way to describe the teachers is if they were people who never wish they left high school. The teachers love to just gossip and talk with the students as opposed to actually teaching them. Kids show up and get grades, then take group tests. Not only that, but if a kid fails anything they are able to retake up to 5 times until they get the grade they want, and homework is not for a grade. In no way are students being help accountable for their actions and grades. It’s awful, but at the same time I know I’ve worked hard enough and cared enough to not put myself into classes like those. The entire education system is seriously fucked up.

 

Damn. And I thought the retesting at my school was generous.

 

And the problem is. The important thing is that someone actually learned the topic regardless of how long it took them. The chances are pretty good that the student who had to try 5 times will retain that knowledge much longer than the one who got it right the 1st time. Too often we are teaching just to pass a test and not actually trying to learn anything long term. They pass the test and forget it the next day.

I taught Industrial Arts from 1980-2010 when I retired. I still substitute a few days each month just to interact with the kids. Say anything you want, it all comes down to the parents. Kids who want to learn will, those who don't won't regardless of the school or teachers.

Georgia, as a state is somewhere around 47th or 48th in the nation in education. Our school system is ranked in the upper 25% in Georgia, but only about average on a National level. We have kids who are as dumb as a sack of hammers. But the kids in the top 10% at our school score at the same levels as kids in the top 10% at any school in the country. Same school, same teachers. The difference is the parents. The problem here in GA is that the lower 90% are so low functioning that it pulls down the states averages.

Home schooling? I've seen plenty, and never saw a kid that could function as an adult afterward. Most of them ended up in public school at some point and were so far behind there was no hope by the time we got them. Not saying it can't work. I've just never seen it. And the most important lessons are not taught in class. The social interactions, especially with those you don't like are vital. You're going to have to deal with that every day of your life and you have to learn how to deal with it.

 

This is kind of off topic, but I was traveling for work when I saw this huge new building being built. It was so grand and over the top that I thought that has to be a large medical center or a community college. I got into town and they were like nope that's the new high school total cost $52 million in a city with a population of 6500. I understand planning for future growth, but wow.

Just reiterating your last point. I completely agree about home schooling. I would never consider it for my kid. It seems like children who are home schooled greatly lack communication skills or being able to work well with others. To sum it up not so nicely, they always seem to be the weird kids.

First day of spring vacation for the wife and I, but she starts her day checking email and sees an email sent by a parent.


It appears that this elementary aged student went home yesterday and told their parent about something another kid told them. The one kid informed the other to never show a particular finger sign to a gang member as it would get them killed, of course the parent is upset that the kids are talking about such things, but blames the school for allowing these kids to interact with each other. How can a well funded, well staffed school monitor every thing every student does? Now how about an underfunded, understaffed, school? I think expectations need to fair.
