Sorry to hear about this OP. I have the clamp too. Im thinking I should just use 3/16 cable, a swaging tool and a ferrule and keep in on long term. I would need a grinder to cut it off. But I almost never need to take it off.

There was vendor selling some nice tailgate locks. Forgot the name and link to the website. They had them for the 2nd gens and were in progress making them for the 3rd gen. Surprised no one posted them yet. I’ll have to search around to see if I can find them

 

Can the bracket be extended to the 2nd bolt - blue arrow? Otherwise, couldn't you lift the bracket, at red arrow, out of the way by pulling on it?

 

Only time I had to remove mine was when I replaced the rusted rear bumper support and rusted rear cross sill.

2. No u can't just lift the bracket up as it wraps around the tailgate hinge , and its 3/16s steel so you can't just bend it easily,

 

But I'd be more than happy to make an extended version for u if u would like?

 

I think it's important to remember that one should probably only go so far in theft proofing a tailgate. Why? Because if you make it inconvenient, most thieves will quickly go elsewhere. Hell, you could make your tailgate totally theft proof, but at what cost? If you look at the odds of having one stolen, you'll find that although it's a problem, it's not nearly as great of a problem as social media can blow it up to be. That said, how much do you really want to spend to theft proof it?

 

Wow, 15 bucks or 25 for a longer version equals hundreds to buy a used gate,
You could not put nothing on it for free and hope the odds are stacked in your favor.
I've never personally had a problem, I just hate tweekers and thief's, just my .02
